This thing just dealt the death-blow to Windows RT:
HP Link
- Tegra 4 (quad-core, 1.8GHz, 72 SPs)
- 1920x1200 IPS display
- 16GB on-board (what happened to 64GB default as announced in May??!)
- 8-10 hours battery life (what happened to 12 hours w/dock attached?)
- "Almost" stock Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 at launch (very few preloads, just a file manager and MS Office-compatible suite)
- keyboard dock included (with clickpad, extended battery, USB 2.0 port, full-size SD slot)
- $479

At that price, I'd seriously have to reconsider buying a budget Atom/Core i3 subnote or netbook vs. this. If you have access to a hosted Windows VM for legacy apps, even better!

I also don't see any Windows 8/RT device matching this spec-for-spec under $500. HP also announced a Split X2 and Envy X2 with Windows RT but those start at $649 and are saddled with a crappy 1366x768 resolution (why???)

I'm wary simply because it's HP, but I do love seeing the keyboard dock included. I wish Asus would do the same.

True, some guinea pig is going to have to test the screen and measure the pixels first before I buy! They better not source the display from the same factory as the Slate 7's display...

Well, it's not like the Transformers killed anything. I'm a little jaded by HP nowadays as well.

On paper it does sound great though.

Are we certain this price includes the keyboard? The price says "Start at $479" so I'm not sure. Price seems too good to be true.

Wow, $800 and it only has 2GB of RAM and a 1366x768 resolution? Not sure I'd buy that even if it did come with the keyboard.

Yeah... that'd be pretty rough even on an 11" screen, let alone blown up to 13" like that thing is

no thanks

BUT I do like the one in the OP. It'd be great to not hear of any hardware issues at launch.

It has routinely been on sale for $599

I think that is the Envy X2 you are thinking of. We are referring to the Split X2, it's not been released yet.

The Envy X2 has an Atom and is $200 cheaper, so it has an excuse (Atom has limits on resolution and memory). The Core i3 based Split-X2 shouldn't be limping with 2GB of RAM and a 768P display.

google needs to release a nexus version of anything, theyve pretty much given up on hardware, esp at low prices

The Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 were released last November, so aren't really due for replacement anytime soon.

The Nexus 7 was released last July, so it's not even late yet, though a bit disappointing Google didn't talk about it's successor at Google IO. But hopefully we'll still get a new one this summer.

There is some unknown Google device that went through the FCC that might be a Nexus Q like replacement.

Regardless of release date the Nexus 4's in drastic need of a replacement.

Is there an hdmi out? One thing that is needed in these docking solutions is the ability to hook up a monitor to them. Or multiple monitors.

I think it's bad form to associate developer conferences as just a place to get free stuff.

i wouldn't say replacement. for a $299/$350 price point we can "excuse" Google/LG for the N4's shortcomings, but what I had higher expectations was for the fixes of the N4's bugs such as the wifi/bluetooth bug, the massive power drain of the radio/modem, sleep issues with the wireless orb, battery life improvements, etc.
