Wow very nice find, just called my local OM they show $39 which is still a good price but I'd love to get it at $19.

Nice. If I didn't get the Visioneer 8100 deal for 9 bucks and change, I would jump on this deal.

Interesting that this was originally posted by ragingBITCH, because that's what I feel like right now. I will address this issue in the Brags and Moans forum, which I think is more appropriate.

However, in line with this thread, I did go to OfficeMax to look at both scanners that were listed in the ad. The 4300Cse for $19.99 and the 5370Cse for $99.99. This OM was out of the first model, but had the second. There was also another circular stating that all clearance merchandise was an extra 10 percent off.

The store circular listed the scanners under "camera clearance", so you may be able to take another 10 percent off.

IF I had a scanner, I would scan the second circular with the clearance coupon on it and post it.

Off now to post in the other forum.

Well since I haven't seen a "free scanner from Staples" deal recently (and I did need one) I decided to check my local OM. Well they had 3 and I grabbed 2. The dude next to me grabbed the last one - Batavia IL. 36 bit but for $17.10/ea out the door this will do just fine.

Nice find, thanks.

If you dont mind please address your issue here - I'm sure if it's something everyone could relate to (problems installing in WinXP or something it will help everyone else here make a more informed decision) Thanks

Copied and pasted from Brags and Moans (I snipped some for brevity):

I went to Office Max to look at some scanners that were listed under hot deals. The store had the scanners printed for sale on a "Camera Clearance" store circular. A second circular stated "Take an EXTRA 10% off all clearance merchandise."

I picked up one of the scanners and took it to the register and showed the cashier the 10% off circular. She said she would have to ask about it. One of the assistant managers came over and told me that the scanner was already on sale, so the 10% off would not apply. He never said it wasn't a clearance item.

So, I asked what the extra 10% off applied to. The cashier said "the stuff on the clearance table" and pointed behind me. This table had a huge triangular laminated sign that read "Take an EXTRA 10% off all clearance merchandise." The asst. manager said the stuff on the table was already more than 10% off and wasn't going to be discounted further. I pointed out that the sign said "EXTRA 10%" off. This fellow, now getting red faced, told me that he couldn't have his cashiers calculating another 10% when people waited in line. I asked him why the sign was on the table and he said "to get people to notice the table."

Of course, I told him that was false advertising. He went over, jerked the sign off the table and said "if this will make you happy, I'll move the sign." And I said "but you will put it back when I leave the store." He said "probably".

I told him I wasn't going to argue over the extra 10% on the scanner, but that I couldn't in good faith deal with a store that used illegal advertising gimmicks to lure people in. I got his name, a business card for the manager (who wasn't in), and copies of the two circulars.
I had looked for online reviews of both scanners. The 5370 had much better reviews, so I considered it a good deal. I did not see any comments regarding XP compatibility of the 4300, however the HP website has XP drivers for the 5370 and said NOT to daisy chain the scanner through the printer. Do one on parallel, the other on USB or each on a separate USB port.

I've been a forum lurker for a while and figured I needed to start asking about these deals when I see them in the stores. I wasn't confrontational, but this fellow treated me like I was an idiot. It was a bad enough experience that Office Max is not somewhere I look forward to entering, when it used to be a favorite store.

Please don't flame me for reposting the above information. I'm new and was trying to follow the forum rules, but was requested to put my problem here.

Thanks for posting the original information. For people going to other OM stores, they could find a nice deal with either scanner.

RagingBITCH, rhand complained because the OMAX manager would not take an additional 10% off the "clearance" scanner. rhand got all pissed over not getting an additional $1.90 savings and stormed out the doors of OMAX.

All over LESS THAN $2!!!!!!!

Aceman, please reread my post. I was trying to buy the $99 scanner and told the asst. manager I wasn't going to argue over $10. I walked out of the store because the asst. manager said the advertised EXTRA 10% would not be honored on any item, that it was just to get people to notice the clearance table. I considered that an illegal practice.

Actually, that brings up a good question.

Dealwise, who would win? Me or Ross?

Rossman, I'm giving the edge to PsychoAndy. You lost out on the tiebreaker due to you believing you were going to get a great deal from cyberwings.

That person's an idiot. THis and most other HP scanners have built in drivers in XP. Not sure about 2000.

This 4300Cse I grabbed was old (first clue = 36 bit, not 48), the CD in the box was dated 2001. My point? XP and 2000 drivers were already on the CD. Albeit my CD was already smashed - apparently in shipping. No worries, I just copied the CD from the other scanner I had just bought.

Look, at $17.10 this is a great deal, go get one or more...
