HP Mini Note - which is better 16GB SSD (Sandisk) or 80GB 4200RPM Drive?

I've pretty much made up my mind in getting the HP Mini 1000 due to the keyboard and aesthetics, but I'm unsure how good netbook SSD's are. I found out that the SSDs used on the mini 1000 are SanDisk pSSD 16GB (unsure what the p infront of the SSD stands for).

How much difference in performance would the SSD be from the 80GB 4200rpm variation be? Loading speeds are pretty important to me. I was planning to install most of my applications in the SSD drive, and just get a 32GB SDHC and formatting it to NTSC so I can store my media there.

The cost between the two is fairly the same 399.99 if I go with the 80GB 4200RPM and a little over 400 if I decide to go with 16GB SSD + 32GB SDHC

Also i don't really have much of an option with HD's because the form factor they use on the mini 1000 is 1.8" PATA, getting a higher performance drive isn't worth the cost.

Any input would be appreciated, I just received my first SSD (Intel X-25m) and I am extremely happy with the performance. I'm very aware of the vast difference in quality between the two SSDs, and I'm hoping someone can give me an idea just how much it would be

Thanks in advance

Which version are you buying, the Mi, XP or Mobile Broadband?

well the MI is the cheapest at the moment at 329.99 i figure I would just install windows XP when I get it

At first glance the Mi and XP are pretty much the same

I cannot remember if i've worked on the HPs with the SSD or with the 4200 RPM drive or possibly both, but i didn't find them unusable either way which is a good thing.

I know that the Acer netbooks with SSDs drive me insane...the performance simply while trying to install something is ridiculously bad.

Either way, performance is going to be pretty craptacular compared to an average desktop drive, but once you get things set up (after installing/doing anything involving writes), performance will likely be slightly better feeling with the SSD.

I'm sure initially setting stuff up isn't going to be fun though...write speeds on those cheap SSDs are pretty bad...

yeah i figured as much, I'm thinking of upgrading the SSD but they are limited to the ZIF 1.8" SSD so i have very little options. The whole point going with the netbook was so it would be cheap but I am finding the cost to add up quickly hehe

I can offer some semi-relevant perspective, having used an OCZ Vertex vs a modern 5400RPM 2.5" HDD on a Celeron 220-based system, and the stock Dell Mini SSD. In my opinion, there was very little difference in overall responsiveness on the Celeron 220 system when comparing the Vertex vs. 5400RPM HDD. My guess is that with the very low-power processors (and the 220 @1.2 is ~25% faster overall than the Atom @1.6), the bottleneck shifts from the storage system to some other factor (most likely CPU) at a relatively low threshold. That said, the Dell Mini with its pathetic stock 8GB SSD, is noticeably less snappy when loading applications for the first time, but once it gets going, I can't really complain.

Put simply, you are not going to multitask to any extent on an Atom (especially given the practical limitations of a netbook platform), even if you had a RAM drive. For a netbook, I value the durability and silence of an SSD over a traditional HDD. I can deal with the extra two seconds it takes to load a web broswer. I might debate if the choice were between a high-density, single-platter 5400RPM drive and an SSD; however, if forced to select between a 4200RPM HDD vs an SSD, it would be no contest.

As far as 16GB for a boot drive- (for a netbook) this is plenty for XP, and with Vlite, even Vista. Heck, Vista can be easily stripped to fit into 8GB with space to spare.

I hear ya dawza, I basically am just going to be using it for some light office work. And burning some dvds and what not. I bought my girlfriend a MSI Wind and I basically accomplish
the same thing with her laptop as I did with my m1330. My only concern really is loading speed because i seriously hate slow loading systems. I do most of my cpu intensive work
on my desktop (on sig), but I would like to still be able to do my everyday business without adding an extra 15-20 minutes to my day because i have to wait for certain things to load.

I ended up ordering a runcore SSD since they were going for $100 dollars @32gb and it seems to have a decent read / write speed (link)

I've never used a 4200rpm drive so I wasn't sure how it would compare to the SSD performance that's why I asked, and I am technically getting this HP mini for free via rewards points.
