For those who still have the old and venerable HP Laserjet 6L (mine still going strong after 4 yrs of hard labor) and having problems with multiple paper feed problems, your *pad* must be worn out. Order one for free HERE ;)

Thanks. All too timely!!!

How many 'L' Tools (6L, 3100, 3150) should I request for 1 printer?

A pair? 10? 4? What's reasonable but not greedy?

Consider posting for 'T' Tools (1100, 1100A)?

Link

The above link is to the installation in structions. It appears that you need one "kit" per printer. It also mentions that if you fail to properly install the kit (or if the kit itself needs subsequent replacing) the printer will need to go to a factory service center.

I have an old HP Laserjet 5L that continuously jammed up the paper feed with multiple sheets. It states on the HP page that the "L" pad is not for the 5L series. scdill, do you install it the same way on the 5L that it shows on the page? I hope this works out--I've been keeping the printer in the basement unused, but I'd like to use it again, as I already have a brand new additional toner cartridge that I wouldn't like to waste.

thanks ..this could save my marriage for all I know. Bought a HP6L back in June 1997 and the past 6 months or so it's been spitting out 20 pages at a time. Unless I fan the paper (like your supposed to) it'll only occassionally spit out multiple paper at once. Then again if my wife does it it's like 100% of the time cuz she won't listen when I tell her to fan the paper and wants me to buy a new printer. I refuse since I hate color printers (jam you up the wallet for color ink) and the laser printer works well for my needs.

Holy cow March 17, 2002....Guess I'll have to print out from work till then.

In a word, yes. I followed the instructions line for line, and they worked perfectly for my 5L. Before installing I was getting almost continous multi-page feeds. After installing (last November) I have had one multi-page feed.

You only need one kit.

I hope this works out--I've been keeping the printer in the basement unused, but I'd like to use it again, as I already have a brand new additional toner cartridge that I wouldn't like to waste.

The L kits also work on the 5L's, I installed one on my home 5L. They are very easy to install & do a beautiful job of solving the problem.

Basically what you're installing is a new separation pad, which is designed to catch any additional pages & leave them in the paper tray. Higher end printers have easily replaced separation rollers that are designed as a user replaceable consumable item (replaced every 200,000 pages), but for consumer level printers the pads work just fine.

If these printers are left unused for an extended period of time, or if they are simply very old, the pad surface can become hard. This is simply an adhesive backed pad with a cardboard application tool.

I have a 6L on my desk at work.

Just a FYI, once ANY laser printer begins to grab more than one page, you're GREATLY reducing the life of the fuser and transfer roller. The increased thickness creates abnormal pressure on the fuser and transfer roller and will reduce life greatly.

My $.02

Man, this is one HOT deal. Thanks everyone for the replies. I was so mad at HP for making such a crappy feed mechanism on their 5L line of printers, I thought I was done with them (I now happen to own an HP2100). If this works, it will be a truly great deal for me--resurrecting an unused printer and brand new toner cartridge from the dead. Hell, I almost threw out my printer the last time I cleaned out my basement. I hope that this works!

Cheers,

If you install it correctly, it will work.

As for the "crappy feed mechanism," you're wrong. The feed & separation system works fine, the problem is the rubber compound didn't age very well. The replacement pad is a new compound, & should last longer.

Feed & separation rollers, transfer rollers, pickup rollers, and fusers are all considered to be consumable items in corporate level printers. In personal printers none of these parts are user replaceable, & no maintenance kit exists. FYI, a maintenance kit for a 4100 costs more than a brand new personal printer.

Wow, glad I didn't throw my 6L away. Anyone know if this'll take care of my printer's lack of ability to feed paper at all? or is it just for those that feed multiple sheets? I felt really bad about buying new toner for it right before it went all screwy on me... hope this takes care of the problem.

Thanks!

Thanks for the information! I've been having feed problems with my old 6L for weeks now. Hopefully I'll be able to get this pad installed properly and it will resolve my issues. :)

This is a great temp repair kit, it is not permenent way to repair it but it will cost $100+ to replace the roller assembly. I've been using this kit for 8 month now, so far so good.

Good post. I ordered them a few weeks back after getting fed up with multiple paper feeds on my 1100 series at my office . Took me about half an hour before I ran into a post on a forum (on HP's site) where someone recommended the free part.

I think they said it would take a few weeks to receive but I got the 2 I ordered in about a week. Cool applicator device. Been working great eversince.

Thanks for the info. We have a 5L at work that hasn't been used for at least two years now. I guess it's time to try to put it back in action.

Cool! We have tons of these machines...all exhibiting feed problems by now. Now, do these replacement pads also wear down/harden so that I should request larger quantities? Or will one be able to last?

WoW! I never knew this many people had the same problem with these HP 5L/6Ls! A few months ago I was ready to beat the crap out of it Office Space style but decided to leave it be. Glad that this little fix will make it work again.

Wow, HP's giving it away free... I used to charge customers a hefty bill for replacing these!

There are maintenance kits available for these personal laserjets. Not sure about genuine HP parts, but Parts Now! in Wisconsin has kits that contain more than just those pads. The thing is for most people, with a kit and labor it is cheaper to just replace the printer!
