wouldn't there be coffee on the keyboard keys as well then???

How does coffee mysteriously just appear on the mobo and not the keys?

Heh, so they spill coffee on your laptop and blame you for it. Either that or they just made it up to get money from you.

I've replaced laptop motherboards for no more than $50. Corporate IT is such a bitch.

Other laptops might be cheaper but when it comes to service, you'll be hard pressed to find a company that does a better job than IBM or Apple.

Just read the updated original post. Did not realize this was a recent purchase.

Purchased from HP direct, or a retailer?

As this is a purchase through HP direct, would opt for the voice route first. Call back, and ask to speak to a supervisor. Proceed up the chain of command until a plateau is reached. If unsuccesssful, then proceed with written correspondence (though I would suggest Certified Mail as email is very easy to ignore).

Interesting, how do you prove that you did not spill coffee on the laptop and how do they prove that you did it and not them... glad I'm not in that boat. Any chance someone else borrowed your laptop without your knowledge?

Good luck to you!

Don't know if this will help

But I e-mail their sales department forward your HP problem thread. I wrote them a letter how I forward this thread to my buddies at Boeing and Ratheon. Stated to them this is ridiculous how they treat their customers and why Dell is steam rolling them in the Enterprise department.

I had a pretty terrible experience with Compaq myself. I couldn't get a Compaq Wifi card to work with my Compaq Armada lappy. When I called them they referred me to their networking group. The networking group told me its a lappy group problem. This went on back and forth and I never got it resolved. WTF can a product made by a company be completely incompatible with a product sold by the same company, especially when it comes to standardized Wifi drivers? It was ridiculous. I ended up chucking the wifi card and got a Linksys instead.

I have a friend with a Compaq Laptop, Presario, and it will not accept any brand of PCCARD wireless adapter. The system recognizes some; with Netgear it will not get past the bios boot screen due to a system conflict, with other brands it'll boot and drivers can install but the card will not actually work.

I think this is a motherboard / card slot issue and according to compaq is not a known problem so since the laptop is just out of warranty the friend is screwed. Well, USB wireless is an option... but... pccard slot is shot.

LAstly, there's an option for an internal wireless but also needs an antennae kit + installation, so pita. USB option is all I'm recommending.

Spending less money is always a good policy. Buy a new $500 laptop. In the end it will save you a ton of troubles and grief.

It is definatly not a no win situation. Ask them to send you proof of the damage. Digital pictures etc showing that it is your system...serial number and all. And as everyone else said keep going up the food chain. No point in paying them money since you didnt damage your laptop
