Hp 42" monitor!

At CompUsa at this VERY moment. They have an HP 42" TRUE monitor (called a signage monitor, no stand but perfectly flat bottom, could wall mount too), true 1920x1080, 16:9, some business bought 2, opened one, returned them both, so brand new for $749!!!! At native resolution the desktop looks great and text is perfectly clear!

The ONLY drawback is that it is in the CLEARANCE section so there is NO RETURN...

I would have it sitting on the back of my desk and it would be over 3 ft away from my eye...

I am sooooo ready to jump on this...

HP LD 4200

YOUR thoughts?

I'd suggest that you hook it up to something with true 1080P output and scrutinize it very, very good. You seem kinda like you have your heart set on a true 30" monitor but at the same time your trying to talk your wallet out of it!

If it looks good to your eyes buy it. Maybe get an extended warranty on it also if available. The price seems cheap....What's the going rate for it?

Edit:

Quick look thru google and the price on them is all over the place. Buy.com has it for $699 plus shipping and maybe tax.

Does state the HP warranty on it is 3yrs tho 🙂

We did hook it up to a PC that does true 1920x1080, looks CRISP...

Going rate is 1500+

You can buy a stand on it from Newegg...

that says it all right there. same/lower price with a 3 yr warranty.

I've never tried gaming on that large of a monitor but it seems like you'd need to be further than 3 ft away. maybe mount it on the wall and move your desk back a few feet?

Ever bought from buy.com? I know nothing about them...

I did get the manager to agree to a 7 day return...

Buy.com has a 20% restocking fee plus I would have to pay shipping...

I think I've bought one or two little things over the years from them when they had good deals going. They seem to be generally well-regarded, I'd rank them below amazon by a bit but lightyears ahead of a generic unknown website.

here's the rankings for buy.com on resellerratings.com:

http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Buy

for comparison, here is amazon, newegg, and directron:

amazon - http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Amazon
newegg - http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Newegg
directron - http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Directron

looks like buy.com is a bit below directron and amazon. obviously newegg is lightyears ahead of the others, buy.com has almost as many reviews as amazon and directron put together. however, it's enormously better than tigerdirect:

edit: don't know what buy.com's return policy is for defective tv's, but I know that newegg gets lots of heat for their return policy on monitors and I can't imagine that buy.com's policy is any better. probably a toss-up, though you obviously get the monitor NOW if you buy the refurb and the 7 day return is very nice.

Not a refurb, BRAND NEW!

If it's brand new then you should be able to get the 3yr warranty on it from HP.

If the text and desktop looks good to you then go for it 🙂

When looking at the specs on HP's page tho it doesn't seem like it would outdo a LCD LED TV at the same size. Power draw for one is 230watts max so I'd think it could put out some heat.

If it was me I think I'd use the same device that looked good on it at 1080P and check out the TV's again....Unless you already have done that.

Just out of curiosity, what is the advantage of this over a 1080P 42" LCD TV? This sounds like a 42" TV just minus the tuner and branded as a monitor.

$749 for an opened item might not be terrible, but, for comparrison Newegg has an LG 1080P 42" TV for $629 (free shipping), and that's not even a sale price. It would be unopened and has a stand. If you don't mind a lesser known brand they start at $469 for 1080P 42". So, is there an advantage to this that I'm just not understanding?

If they're giving you 7 days no questions asked returns then there little reason not to check it out non this page:

http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en...6-3912134.html

It says the response rate is 9ms. If that's the pixel response, that's pretty slow, you might notice streaking or other annoying issues. And obviously you don't know what the input lag will be.

But if it's an easy return then it might be worth just trying it... Good luck!

This is an actual MONITOR not a TV...

The Dell U3011 has a 7ms response time...

I went ahead and got it and will be hooking it up in a bit to my PC and giving it a shot...

HP calls it a "display" and not a monitor. They say it's meant for public viewing in schools and hospitals so as long as you're not expecting much performance out of it then it seems ok.

I understand that, it's a monitor. But what is it's advantage over a TV? It's still 1080P, the biggest advantage of monitors is that typically their resolution increases with size (30" monitors have 2560x1600 res, as an example). But this 42" is still just a 1080P display labled as a monitor. I'm not knocking it, I just don't understand what the difference is.

What makes it better than the TV below at $120 more?

I haven't hooked it up at home yet but on the PC at CompUSA, text and font did not look distorted and looked sharp like they do on a monitor, they NEVER look right at native resolution on a TV...IMO.

I bet you just bought the exact same panel that is in a lot of TV's. But as long as it makes you happy.

Got this baby hooked up...O M Gosh!!!!!!!!!!

Internet and font looks great...

Deadspace 2 and Borderlands both play great....no mouse lag!

Pics coming soon!

I don't think so, NO TV I hooked up, plasma, lcd, or led had text and font THIS sharp...

I'd think it has more to do with the electronics that are running the panel. If you glance at the specs they are pretty much the same as alot of the TV's you'll see. The difference is the electronics and how HP tweaked the settings for the panel as it's geared to be a monitor and not a TV 🙂

Glad your happy with it! So did you just lean it up against a wall or what?

If your looking for a wall mount check out monoprice.com as they have some pretty good ones on the cheap! Think they ship priority mail also! They also have desk mounts if that's what your looking for.

Here is a snipping tool pic of how good the font looks...

It's a bit bright now, have to get some AAA batteries to work the remote as otherwise all the controls are behind the monitor...

FYI...the remote does not have channel controls or volume so it is NOT to work a "TV"
