alright, I got this to work exactly how he has it setup. However, if I have another PC that has a wirless card, would I be able to connect to the second wrt54g router that is connected to PC2?

Assuming you have:

Internet --- Router1 (Access Point) +++wireless+++ Router2 (Client Bridge) --- PC2

Another PC could only connect wirelessly to Router1, unless you changed the routers to WDS repeater mode (or attached another AP to Router2, etc.).

Works great! Thanks a bunch.

Is there anyway I can share files between my computers this way (include the xbox in my network)? If so, how do I go about setting this up?

EDIT: I'm using a Trendnet TEW-432BRP and a WRT54G router w/HYPERWRT firmware installed.

Hi - quick question, don't know if anyone has followed up with this in the forums, but does this process work with the WRT54G v5 (version 5) routers or only the old ones?

Would love to know coz I am eager to try it out.

thanks

I've been reading a lot of the posts in this thread, but nobody seems to want to do quite the same thing I want to do. Please tell me if this should work:

I have a wireless ISP. When I connect to their AP, I get their web page and I have to log in to then get internet access. Is it possible to use the WRT54G with modified firmware to talk to my wireless ISP and then share this connection out to another wireless router which then sets up my private LAN? All I know about the ISP's AP is the SSID and MAC address.

here's the proposed topology:

My ISP's AP -> wireless -> WRT54G -> ethernet cable -> Any wireless router I choose -> combination of wired/wireless PC's on private LAN

If it is possible, what mode should the WRT54G operate in and what is the recommended firmware?

Thanks!

This is a kind of interesting problem. I guess a lot would depend on what you mean by going to their web page and logging in... is it a seperate window that prompts a password or is it like checking gmail and typing your username/password into fields on the screen?

I've seen some settings on DD-WRT that allow for Connection Type. Some even have fields similar to what I would think you would need to have your router connect wirelessly to another AP.

i just wanted to pop in and thank the OP for posting this. it motivated me to buy a buffalo whr-g54s and use it as a bridge. i tried the method provided and while it worked for internet access, i could not ping any machines from machines on the opposite router.

i finally ended up using this method. one thing, though, you'll save yourself a lot of aggravation if you remember you're using WLAN access lists and modify accordingly (doh!).

dlue: it should definitely be possible, but i'll let someone that won't misinform you tackle it.

Many thanks OP for your tutorial. I just used my old Asus Wl-500g (with DD-wrt) to connect my Xbox 360 wirelessly :)

THANK YOU FOR THIS GREAT THREAD AND ESPECIALLY TO user1234 ! Naively purchased a MS wireless adaptor for the XBOX 360 system to go LIVE only to find out my existing Netgear Rangemax 240 (WPNT834) and the MS adaptor bridge do not communicate (not compatible, yet). Had an older problematic router (Linksys WRT54G Version 5), followed the procedure of user1234 on page 1 and the first link of Madwand1 mentioned just above, and easily updated the firmware of the Linksys router to DD-WRT Micro (used for V5 and V6 models) and turned the Version 5 router into a wireless Ethernet bridge, for the XBOX and for any other PC's that we connect to it. All this taking less than 30 minutes! Connected the Linksys to the XBOX 360 and it immediately confirmed a successful link to the main Netgear router on the far reaches of the house, and we're now online with XBOX Live doing battle with friends and foes.

GREAT EXAMPLE OF KNOWLEDGE SHARING BY THE USERS OF THIS FORUM!

thanks to User1234 & all other contributers to this great thread,

Apologies if this has been covered before, but I have read 19 pages and spent 2 nights on this thing already without any success configuring the client router. 1 quick ques:

1. I have firmware V4.01.1 on WRT54G do I need to upgrade to work in client router mode? (as the links to sveasoft version seem to be an older version than what my router is currently running)

thanks in advance

Welcome to AT Network Forum.

This thread started a year ago, at the time the user Flashed his Linksys Router with the sveasoft firmware.

Currently most end-users prefer DD-WRT free firmware. With DD-WRT it is much easier to do what you need to do.

Hi everyone

I'm kind of new at this forum!

I have a problem which I really would appreciate a solution or some help to!

I have two OpenWRT-based wireless routers, and I'm configuring them by SSH.

Let's call them R1 and R2.

R1 is acting as an AP and R2 is acting as an client AP.
R1 have a bridge between Wireless and wired ethernet ports, and that works great. I'm able to connect to the AP with my laptop secured with WPA and receive a IP from the DHCP server on the main router to whom the AP is connected to.

R2 is as I said acting as a Wireless client, and it can also connect to R1 with WPA (wpa_supplicant). Everything works, I can ping the R1 and the rest of the wired PCs / Internet from R2 SSH console.

However, what I¨m trying to establish is a second bridge, just like on R1, but on R2.
So i can wire a PC to R2¨s ethernet port, and the PC will receie it's IP from the main router DHCP just like the laptop.

Something like this:

PC --> R2 ---WLAN--- R1 --> main router

However, the problem arrises when I bridge the Wireless and ethernet interfaces on R2, suddenly I cannot no longer ping R1 bridge interface from R2! From the PC i can ping the R2 bridge, but of course not further on to the bridge of R1.

Anyone with some practical ideas? I's driving me mad these last days of experimenting and confguring!

That sounds great, as I would have no problem paying sveasoft (or anyone else) for firmware day 1 but I don't like the idea of annual charges (e.g. am I cought with an admin job each year to renew, etc, etc).

Have some users here tried the DD WRT free firmware version for the Linksys and if so what has the experience been like?

Thanks for all replies,
Horgand

Many many people use DD-WRT with Linksys hardware (probably the most common) and like it.

No, it doesn't work that way in the usual bridge configuration. The bridge does not support additional wireless clients. The bridge supports additional wired clients, which then communicate to the main router over the wireless link. In such a mode, wireless client bridge, it generally does not matter what the main router is. The bridge is connecting as a generic wireless client. Other wireless clients could try to connect directly with the main router.

If you want to use the second router as a wireless repeater, then you need to use WDS mode. This mode requires a main router / access point which is compatible with the WDS implementation of the repeater. Generally, the vendors say that this must be the same brand / family of devices. DD-WRT has WDS support, so if you have a pair of devices running DD-WRT, you should be fine.

Thanks Madwand1,

Sounds like I'm better off with 2 linksys wrt54g running DD WRT firmware configured for WDS so to get the client router acting as a wireless repeater.

WRT54GL or Buffalo WHR-G54S (or the HP version) would be safer bets in general. The DD-WRT wiki has more details on supported and recommended hardware.

Thanks for that great tutorial. I followed the instructions and everything work with, except one thing, which is not posted in this thread. I have the problem, that I can ping from my pc connected to the client-router to the mainrouter and every pc connected to this and even to public ip addresses, but it is not working if I ping only the DNS Name. In a Browser I can access the webpages from the internet by entering the ipaddress but not when I use the domain name. I tried to configure the client router with and without DNS-Server and tried to use only the main-router address. But nothing helped. Does anybody know what to do, so that I can use domain name from my pc connected to the client router?

I did the steps you mentioned and it works great
but from the pc's connected to the main router (not the wrt54g acting as the bridge) i cant telnet wrt54g nor can i go to the router web page, i can ping it from pcs connected to the main router and can ping the other way (from pc's connected to wrt-54g to pc connected to the main router). anyone seen this before?

Can the wrt54g be used as a wireless repeater?
like, let's say there's 2 houses in a neighborhood side by side, one house has the internet and has it connected to some wireless router (not necessarily a wrt54g) can the 2nd house have a wrt54g be a wireless repeater? does it work the same way as in the these steps?

thanks!

your double NAT'ing thats why things arent working. if not double dhcp, and double firewall and everything.

why would you have 2 routers stacked ?
the WRT54g is a router on its own, why do you need two routers/switches.
plug the linksys right in to the dsl modem and thats all.

if you insist on having both units running on top of your dsl modem which probably is a router also, since most if not all newer dsl modems are a router also, then your going to have to do some serious fixing.

you need to turn off DHCP and NAT on anything AFTER the router connected to the DSL modem. if the DSL modem is also a router then you need to turn off DHCP on the d-link also.

if your going to do anything, run the wrt54g on the modem, then turn off the dhcp server and nating on the dlink and hook it to that.
or jsut go buy a true switch, not a router, a true switch. or find out if there is a way in the d-link to turn off routing and just use switching. most thing will have an option to make it a Gateway or a Router.
