I've been using my htpc to store all my movies and video on 10 hard drives (4 internally and 6 in a external enclosure) for a total of ~8tb. I'm looking to expand and the external enclosure connected via usb just isn't cutting it anymore. So I'm looking at building a new server.

This is strictly for storing files (movies, videos, pictures) that will be streamed to my htpc over a gigabit network. I'm looking for good throughput to prevent the video from studdering when it's sent over. I would like to keep latency as low possible, without going with SSD or RAID, so that browsing through the movies will be quick and snappy on the htpc. No games will be played nor any of the movies will be watched on it. Also I already have a cheap pcie video card laying around that I'll be using for video.

Will the parts I selected satisfy what I want to do?

Ouch isn't that $17 Sunbeam PSU a piece of junk?? You don't want to cheap out on a PSU for a file server -- a bad psu is going either make the system unreliable or decrease the life expectancy of your HDs.

Ok wait a second, you're getting a gigantic $290 rackmount case and a $17 PS??? You've got to be joking!

I have an unraid box similar to this.
I'm using 2 SUPERMICRO AOC-SAT2-MV8 64-bit PCI-X133MHz SATA Controller Cards to support 15 drives. I am running the cache and parity drives off the motherboard's sata ports to give them more bandwidth. I am using a CORSAIR CMPSU-620HX for the Power supply. They are running in the same case you have. Honestly, with something like this, if you plan to move towards the maximum HDD capacity that it allows, a quality PSU is a must imho. Otherwise, I think you are fine. I'm running it on a server mobo with an older AMD opteron and 2GB of ram just fine; using on-board video (it's a headless machine 99% of the time anyway).

Yeah... a lowly 480W generic power supply for a system with 10 hard drives? Eeek.

Get at least a name brand 600W power supply for that thing, maybe something like this, which just happens be on sale with a rebate right now:

Might want to look into one of those 80 plus power supplies for more efficiency, since you will leaving this system on 24/7. Depending on how much power your system draws, this could pay for itself over the long run. Im going to be building a home server soon and will probably be using the Antec Earthwatts 380.
