How's Gears of War the PC port version?

I wanted to play Gears of War but wondering if Epic did a good job in porting the console version or not. I remember playing some console port games on the computer and they are just pure crap. Anyone has some experience? Thanks,

i dunno, but reviewers that were orgasming over the 360 version are giving it lower scores even though it has more content and better visuals

The hype/buzz has worn off I guess. Gamespot said it was the best version of GOW available and gave it a 9.0 IIRC.

The standards for this type of game are a lot stiffer on the PC so I can see how a year old port could lose some luster even with the upgrades. Plus, the novelty has worn off. GoW is old news and PC gamers are all about Crysis and its ilk.

It's a very solid port, to answer your question. Epic really took their time and seem to have put a lot of thought into it. Well, except for the whole Live account system for multiplayer.

Good lord. COD4, GOW, and Crysis all in the same month.

150 dollars!

I'd be more interested in GoW if it were a bona-fide first person view shooter and not a third person view shooter.

Its not old news for me, I never bought a X360 and frankly never had a reason to. The only games I ever wanted to play on it were on the PC as well, and now this one too.

The PC version is a lot better IMO, but I'm a keyboard mouse kind of person. I have played the 360 version at a friends BTW. I don't know if you'll agree, because frankly I thought Halo and Halo2 were better on the PC as well and never understood those who said differently. And in this case I own an Xbox and both games.

Oh and KoTOR and KoTOR II were a lot better on the PC as well because of all the mods. In fact, I can't think of a single console port that I didn't enjoy better on the PC. I'm just a PC gamer through

Thanks for the replies and some good-to-know info. As for some example of bad ports, Splinter Cell and Rainbox 6 - Vegas are the only 2 that I can pull out on top of my head that are so bad it's not even funny.

Couldn't have said it better. I can't understand why people enjoy 3rd-person shooters.

Yeah the fact that it is a 3rd person shooter kept me from going straight to the store and buying the Xbox 360 and GoW the day it came out...

Glad that I didn't now.

I bought Gears Of War for PC on the release day as I never played the original for 360 and I absolutely love it! It doesn't feel like a port at all and has many options that usually ports usually lack. I haven't had any trouble with performance and run everything max at 1280x1024. I also haven't had any stuttering issues that people have been complaining about. The graphics look simply amazing and it's keeping me busy until Crysis is released next week.

It's a fantastic port, very well done. Performance is nice, there is stuttering yes, but I think that is due to the levels being stream loaded (there are very few load screens, and they are very short). All the stuttering I've encountered happened in empty areas, never during fights, so that's why I think it's due to the game loading in the background. Basically, it feels like it was built from the ground up for PC.

There's been a big stink about the Windows Live stuff, and I wasn't too happy about it when I first heard of it. But in practice, it's no big deal, it's basically like having Steam's friends list. You can do just about anything with a free Silver account; host a match, join a match, whatever. The only thing you can't do is join RANKED multiplayer matches, that requires the paid Gold subscription.

I must say the Versus multiplayer is very very fun, I thought 4v4 matches would be either too fast or too boring, but the balance of the maps, player health, and weapons make it perfect. Also, voice chat is built in and runs automatically, just talk into your mic and that's it. I also love the third person perspective, looks great and feels very different in a good way.

OH NOES!!!

why should i pay for something i get for free in damn near every other game, with the exception of MMOs. Anything on steam has the full gamut for free.

My Review so far

I haven't beaten GOW yet, but I'm having a blast. It's a bit linear, but it doesn't feel that way. There are a few parts where monsters spawn endlessly till you do X/Y/Z, which is kinda lame, but they can be dealt with. I've experienced some stuttering. It is annoying for me, but that's because I'm running at fairly low framerates (my X850XT is showing its age :(). The game scales well (U3 engine) - I'm running E4300 @2.4ghz, 2gig DDR667, X850XT, but if you have a better video card you should be good to go for 1024x768-1280x1024 cranked or even higher. Multiplayer is pretty solid, although there aren't many games at the moment. There are few things more enjoyable than chainsawing someone in half (SP or MP).

I'm actually glad the game is 3rd person - I think there are way too many FPS games these days. It's much more tactical than most shooters - running and gunning will get you killed *very* quickly. The game's emphasis is on using cover, taking a few shots, then getting back. It's a nice change of pace, IMO, but it may/may not be your cup of tea. I think it's worth picking up for $40-$50.

So I bought GoW mainly because I had money burning a hole in my pocket and Crysis isn't out yet. A year ago I played it on the 360 at a friend's house and was underwhelmed by everything, except the camera - the way it follows you "combat style" as you run is pure awesomeness.

First off, the game looks and plays great. As any knowledgeable person would expect, it is MUCH easier to play with the KB / Mouse and the controls are pitch perfect for a PC game. As said before, the design of this game really makes a third person shooter enjoyable. The cover system plus the emphasis on flanking the enemy creates a very unique cadence to the firefights. The production values are very console-like, but that's ok as it's a console port. The game ran silky smooth on my machine at 1920x1200 on XP. I haven't installed it under Vista yet.

Now for the suck assedness.

First off, you have to have a Games for Windows Live (GfWL) account just to save a freaking SINGLE PLAYER game. I have no words for how stupid this is. I'm sure it officially has to do with saving achievements and the like but we all know what's up here. I might not have a problem with it if it weren't for the fact that I can not log into GfWL. The web is ablaze with complaints about not being able to log in and I am one of the afflicted parties. This means that I can't even properly enjoy the damn single player campaign cause Microsoft wanted to use this game to pimp their obviously buggy ass online system that I don't care about anyway. I'm on the verge of taking this thing back and selling it to somebody for 40 bucks.

Lastly, I bought a wireless XBOX360 controller with the game. Not because I wanted the toenail pullingly bad experience of playing this with a controller instead of the KB / Mouse but because 1) I play a lot of Madden on my CPU and people complain about my Logitech pads and 2) I wanted my friend with it on the 360 to play it with the controller and then the KB / Mouse so that he can see why I hate console FPSes with a passion (and how the PC just owns the X360 graphically). Anyway, the freaking controller doesn't work! Oh, did I say it doesn't work? Let me put a finer point on that. The "X" button in the middle of the controller works to bring up the GfWL log in prompt, but nothing works during the game. I played Madden and the Crysis Demo (PLEASE stay away from Crysis with a gamepad!!!!!) and it worked fine, Gears of War? No go. WTF? Am I missing something?

I could write more about this but I've cursed enough in this post. I'll try to install it under Vista and see if that helps with the GfWL thing and, if not, this baby is going back to the sto.

RZaakir, I thought you just have to connect to play online? played it on a friends PC, created a Live account and played locally without connecting to the internet. It said I would have to go online and create the account if I wanted to play online, and if I created a simple local live I could play but if I ever switched to the online Live I would loose my achievements. What am I missing here?

QueBert, it will let you play the SP game without connecting to Live but it will not let you save. So every time you play you have to start from the beginning unless you ALT TAB out and leave the game running.

Update: I installed it under Vista and everything works fine now. The strange thing is that it took about twice as long to install. Also, it looks remarkably better under Vista, the AA helps but the DX10 motion blur is sweet too.
