do you have to have vista to use windows live in order to match online?

that requires a "gold" subscription. f-that.

OH NOES!!!

why should i pay for something i get for free in damn near every other game, with the exception of MMOs. Anything on steam has the full gamut for free.

:/

His point is completely valid. I will never, EVER, pay for Windows Live.

i'd say your best bet for benchmarking is to download the UT3 demo and see how well you can play that.

i got 25-30ps @ 1280x1024/medium all with the UT3 demo. sometimes GOW will crawl based on HDR lighting, shadows, etc. i imagine your rig will do much better than mine with the X1950 though:)

i am running GOW @ 1024x768/medium all; includes shadows/post processing, etc.

I have a job too (a very well paying one I might add) and I will be damned before I pay 50 bucks a year for a service that - as of right now - doesn't even support 5 games and supports only one game that I'm even remotely interested in.

Other than MS Live integration for multiplayer, this version is overall better than the X360 version.

The PC version has a better control option (mouse and key) and better graphics (if you have an 8800 or a 2900). With the exception of some additional content, everything else seems to be exactly the same (which is good). I do have to say that the control system for Gears is much slower than for most FPSs, but the the control style in this game is far from traditional; at times, it is very slow to properly aim a grenade, and at other times, I find myself latching on to cover that I didn't mean to latch on to. Using the 360 controller, you would expect that general lack of precision, but just something to get used to with mouse and keyboard.

I'd be more interested in GoW if it were a bona-fide first person view shooter and not a third person view shooter.

Couldn't have said it better. I can't understand why people enjoy 3rd-person shooters.

Amen.

It's not as bad as you might think. I personally go back to Spear of Destiny so I'm all about the FPS, but Gears is a lot of fun.

I think R6: Vegas got it best with their hybrid 1st/3rd person.
