How's Dead Space?

So I just finished Amnesia: The Dark Descent. I have to say that it is genuinely one of the most frightening games I've ever played (up there with System Shock 2), and it has inspired me to try other games that will make me wet my pants like a little 5 year-old. From my preliminary research it seems that Dead Space is the best candidate to fulfill such a goal, but I was wondering what you guys personally think of it. Opinions?

Amazing game, much better than the trash that was RE5, ive hyped this game up many times as its really very well done and surprising considering it came from EA. However its designed for the consoles so if you plan to play it on the PC i advise you to use a 360 controller.

Yeah. It needs a controller. And while it does have some thrills, they're mostly of the "monster jumps out of nowhere!" type and those wear off kind of fast. But it is still fun.

I never really got scared playing it, but it is one of my favorite games. I'm terrible with maps and get lost often so the ability to hold down R3 and have a line help guide me really made the game for me. The story was a little "wtf?" but I thought it was really well done, especially the
"tricks" you have to pull to kill the "immortal" guys.
If you play with a gamepad, switch to M+KB before you do the "shoot the things outside the ship with this big cannon" missions or you'll want to rip your hair out

I really enjoyed Dead Space. I thought that Doom 3 and Quake 4 were pretty overrated in the horror factor and I despise most horror movies because they fail the description. I'm on playthrough #3 and Dead Space still makes me jump. Interested to see how Dead Space 2 is when released next month.

The game doesn't make you as helpless as in Amnesia (I think that's a huge factor in its own theme), but it's a really good-looking backdrop with equal parts of disturbing. I first played on PC and later on 360...I disagree with the "designed for consoles" premise to justify getting a 360 controller for PC especially since they cost more than the game itself. It doesn't take long to get used to the aiming if you use a mouse, and all it does is make the speed upgrades less meaningful.

Dead Space was one of the few games that I actually finished. A lot of games start to lose their fun factor after 1/3rd of the story. But Dead Space kept me going the whole time. It was quite honestly one of the best games I have ever played, period.

Dead space was amazing. One of the more original games in quite some time. It wasn't particularly "scary" but the game produces a great atmosphere and had excellent controls. Now would be as good a time as any to pick it up as I believe the sequel is coming out in about a month.

If you like resident evil style gameplay, you'll like deadspace. Takes 6-8 hours to beat on normal. It's not the same scary as Amnesia, that game was creepy while Dead Space uses the monster that randomly jumps out to scare you tactic.

I love the RE series! Well, at least up until 4 when the gameplay started to go in a different direction... but that is a different discussion altogether. Sounds good guys, thanks for the input!

Dead Space has way, way more in common with Resident Evil 4 and 5 than it does with earlier RE games. It's an over-the-shoulder shooter, the camera is pretty decent, the controls are good, and it's easy to aim. You also get much more ammo than in early RE games (though still much less than in a typical shooter).

I loved Dead Space.

Because of the mouse lag, I found it played much better with a 360 controller.

VSync off, tweak mouse accel/sens in drivers. Plays beautifully. I tried the demo on ps3, man is it hard to aim with a controller, especially trying to pinpoint limbs when you have 3+ coming at you. I don't even use wasd normally and thought the Dead Space controls worked perfectly.

Yeah, I didn't put any effort into tweaking the KB+M and found the 360 controller to work well.

I'm use to it in this age of console ports. Rarely does a game have sufficient options to make my mouse feel right. Pretty much a given I have to use a profile on my G9 for each game. Keyboard has also become this way, lazy ass programmers.

Hmmm... sounds like if I'm going to get back into PC gaming it may be worthwhile to invest in a 360 controller. How ironic...

I played it 3 times through on my PS3. One of the only games I've actually finished on that system. Probably one of my favorite games of all time.

If you don't have time to ingest fiber in your diet, I suggest playing AVP2 in the Marine campaign.

I only played as predator in AVP2, but in the newest one there's nothing in the marine campaign that is all that scary. Killing xenomorphs in a club with techno music playing and seizure inducing blinking lights? lame...

I played it for a few hours. I liked the story/ambience etc, but the fact that I couldn't see the things attacking me because of the narrow view really pissed me off. I would spin around then they would move, and I still couldn't see them. The control scheme was also not the best.

I like it, but I can only move about 100 meters down the hallway each time I play before calling it quits. It is too tense!

I'm running it in 3D with 7.1 headphones, so the immersion is crazy. My mind knows it is just a game, a "monster pops out of the corner" game at that, but the rich visual and audio cues trigger the reptillian reaction in my brain

The big problem for me though is caused by my XBOX 360/PC wireless controller I'm using on my HTPC. I'm used to a mouse, I can't spin around or aim quickly enough with the XBOX controller. Even with the annoyingly slow pan rate, aiming still doesn't seem precise!

Has anyone experience this problem? Should I switch to a *wired* XBOX controller?

Then during hand-to-hand combat when the alien grabs me, the games tells me to press "A" and I do, but nothing happens. The results are very disturbing to watch. I guess I need to chuck the wireless controller for this game.

I think RE5 is better on PS3. On PS3 RE5 has better graphics than Dead Space does. This may not be true on PC.
