Exactly. How is it a vacation when your going to be miserable for 6-8+ hours a day? Is it worth saving 300-400$ on the vacation over something that happens rarely and is supposed to be enjoyable? With 5 people in a hotel room I wouldn't even go for a personal business trip. It just sounds like NOPE.avi.

starting to plan my summer/fall vacation, and I've gotten to thinking that if we get 1 room instead of 2, we could probably stay in a much nicer hotel wherever we end up going (current top contenders are Orlando (for Disney/Universal), San Francisco, or Seattle)

but it has me wondering, how would you split payment between 5 people if one of them end up on a sofa bed/couch or air mattress in the hotel room? seems like they should get a discount for the inconvenience... alternatively, the one couple could take the one bed and the singles could rotate, but then I still feel like the singles should get some percentage of a break.

(otherwise, it'll be the couple in one room and the three singles in another, but going college ghetto style would open up the possibility of getting a nice suite or something if the couple doesn't mind going a week without sex... obviously gotta check with everyone involved first, just thinking ahead)

2 people sleep on one bed, 2 people sleep on the the other bed, and the third person gets the pullout bed for them self.

There is nothing wrong with a pullout bed from a couch. It is perfectly fine to sleep on for a few days, even a week.

Split the bill evenly then do a rotation.

Though personally I wouldn't go if I had to sleep on a pullout or in the bath tub (been there, done that). It's a fucking vacation. If your goal is to just get arrangements that are "fine" then you're missing the point of a vacation.

[getoffmylawn]I'm too old for that shit.[/getoffmylawn]

Maybe pick a less expensive destination so you get get a nicer room if money is an issue.

edit: Oh, there's a couple and three singles? Get two rooms or everyone will be miserable.

Forget how to split the bill, 5 people sharing 1 bathroom? That would be enough misery to stop the idea in its tracks.

Got to http://www.vrbo.com/ or similar site and find someone renting a 2 bd/2 ba place in the area you want.

I go to a fair number of out of town conferences & business events, situations where I can chose to share a room with female associates. My limit for such sharing is 3 people total including myself. I get my own darn bed, sharing a bathroom with four other people would be like the stuff of nightmares.

that is an excellent point.

the vacation will potentially either be 2, 3, or 5 people.

I'm guessing:

2 people - we stay at the hotel of my choice
3 people - hotel of my choice and semi-awkwardly share a room
5 people - 2 rooms and I pick a hotel that I know my friends will be able to afford without breaking the bank

That does not sound like a vacation.
There's plenty of reasons to save money, and just because you're ok with dropping $200/night on a room, doesn't mean everyone is.

I'm in my 20s, and it's often fun to stuff 5-6 people in a room for Vegas. I'm not ok with the 10 person rooms because of the 1 bathroom situation (and girls need FOREVER at Vegas), but for 2 rooms amongst 10 is fine.

TBH I just split it evenly. We rotate. Sometimes people get the bed, sometimes people get the couch. I was ok with that in one of my vegas arrangements. I got the bed one night and the pull out the other 2 nights. We try to make sure everyone has a decent place to sleep and that no one's on the ground. The one guy who slept on the ground refused to share the sofabed.

People go on vacation to relax and enjoy themselves. Sleeping on a floor/couch/pull out bed is the opposite of relaxing and enjoying yourself. Sleep is more important than anything else and having bad night sleep due to shitty sleeping conditions will ruin the rest of the vacation for at least that person.

definitely depends on the people and situation. My cousin and brothers will sleep wherever we fall down beautifully all night. We usually get a single hotel room, not worth it to pay money for a hotel that we're barely going to be in.

Unless this is going to be an orgy week then book at a hotel the group can afford.

The bed is not what would be the issue, it's having the share a single bathroom for 5 people I can see being quite hectic in the morning.

Maybe just set it up so the person on the air mattress can be the last so they don't have to get up as early. Sounds fair to me.

Pro rata based on space each person occupies. So each person pays ((height x width x depth)/(combined height x width x depth of all occupants)) *( total square footage of room/cost of room)

It's the only fair way.

I'd happily sleep on the couch under those circumstances. I'm not sleeping in bed with some other guy.

And, it's the hotel room. If you guys spend more than about 8 hours a day, 90% of which is sleeping, in a hotel room, you're doing vacation wrong.

Pros: save money
Cons: have to wait in the morning for 5 people to take showers.

Also, I thought that nicer hotels controlled the environment (noise, etc.) by not allowing 5 unrelated guys to share the same room. 5 unrelated, early 20's guys = noisy room, party, far too often.

And then it turns out at least one of you is a snore-beast and the whole plan goes out the window.
