Black bear - I wouldn't do anything... they'll generally just leave you alone. I've been pretty close to several black bears in the woods. Last year I had a mother and a cub walk under the tree next to me. I've had a bear and a cub run away from loud dirt bikes or 4-wheelers (I couldn't see them) - on a path that I was standing next to. Zooooom, right past me. I snuck up on a deer once that was making a rub on a small tree (I could see the tree moving) - I stood up from behind a bank and sounded just like John Candy: "big bear... big bear..." around 450 pounds - huge for a black bear. And, none of those times did the bears seem to give a sh!t about me. Little do they know I've been waiting for a big one to pass me when I'm bow hunting.
Now grizzly bears... I hear they're a different story. I don't have those around here though. But, pocket knife = useless. St ab it in the eye = fat chance. Well, maybe if the bear holds still for a couple of seconds for you. You'd probably miss and only succeed in p!ssing the bear off.
Oh, and 12 gauge with slugs vs. bear? 12 gauge wins, if you have good aim. Drop to one knee though, so you're shooting level with a charging bear.
