I need a pair of computer speakers, and my budget is tight. It would likely be the X-530 if I go that route. But I have decent pair of boston acoustics home stereo bookself speakers not currently in use. I'd have to buy a used reciever/amp for them. That should be <$50 because I'd be looking for an old stereo one (I only have 2 speakers). They are magnetically shielded so that wouldn't be a problem either.

My main question is if this is worth it. Sound quality should be good, (I think...it is AC97 afterall), but its a little but a pain. Also although music is where I really like high-fidelity, I do play games on occassion and don't want to be limited by not having a 5.1 set.

What do you guys think, is it worth it?

If you used a reciever for your pc it would have to be on constantly.

If you just want a decent 2.1 system look up altec lansing avs300 on ebay.

I have those, acs33, ca4100, and another stereo set, totaling 10.3 but i just use them all in 2 channel mode. perfect (loud) sound.

yes i know im a freak.

Running bookshelf speakers is a gread idea if you have them already. You can pick up a used cheap brand receiver off ebay, or better yet, check out a vintage high quality unit. If you game more and really want surround, then get a surroud set, but if you listen to a good amount of music, I'd go for the bookshelf speaker route.

I'd rather have 2 really nice speakers than a cheap 5.1 set.

I have been doing this since 1989, on a PC, and back to 83 on my old Atari 800.

I use a Sony 6.1 surround receiver running 4 of the cast aluminum shielded Radio Shack (yes, I know but these ARE decent speakers for a small room!) minimus speakers and a 12" Sony Sub. I had two of the RS speakers already and got two more off ebay cheap.
I will get another identical speaker for the center when I get around to it. If you check the "scratch and dent" at Best Buy or CC, along with the clearance stuff, you never know what you might find. I got the Sub for a hundred, mismarked, it was supposed to be $150, marked down from $200. The receiver was $149 mismarked, it was supposed to be $200 down from $250. Both were found at BB on separate visits. CC had a scratch and dent that actually I liked better, but it was rough looking, so I drove down to BB.

I had, since 1984, been using an older surround receiver that I bought for 50 bucks from a friend who bought it, DOA for $100 at a local stereo place that folded up. I had it going in ten minutes, just a bad solder joint. I got 20 years out of it! One day though, it just blew up when I turned it on.

This set up kills just about any PC speaker set up I have ever heard, including the worshipped Klipsh's. Plus, I can listen to FM/AM on it too. Now that I have a PC with a digital output, I will be hunting up a cable to connect it that way, instead of the analog setup I use now.
