When I wake up I have 1 cup of coffee. That's it. On occassion I run out of coffee for a few days. During that time I feel tired for the next 2-3 days.

Dunno. Try different coffee or try various Teas. If it always upsets your stomach, you're SOL or you'll have to live with it. I suppose.

Pretty much, if you find it hard to stop, and get effects such as a head ache, you're addicted.

I actually tested to see if I was addicted to pepsi so I stopped drinking it for a week, and faired out ok. I would not say it was super easy, but was not hard either. My peak is when I drinked 2 per day though. Some people will drink nearly a whole case. I'd like to see them try to stop for a week cold turkey.

I can substitute soda with ice tea or OJ easily . Coffee however is a different story. I had to drink coffee 3-4 times a day. I'm down to two times a day now....whooppee.

I suffer from this too. I just do without coffee now, and just get my caffeine by other means. I drink tea sometimes, I have a big box of green tea that I keep under my desk at work, but it just doesn't have anywhere near the same level of caffeine. Pepsi Max has become my drink of choice lately. It also can't touch a good cup of joe, but 20oz comes close.

If you simply must have coffee though, try taking an antacid before having a cup. That worked for me most of the time when I remembered to take them. You could also talk to your doctor, and get a prescription for Nexium. It worked great, but every now and then, it made me vomit.

Cheap ass JetAlert from Walmart, or buy 400 grams of powdered caffeine from BulkNutrition for less than $15

200mg: slight headache fixed with a sip of tea and tylenol
400mg: headache bad enough that I have to lay down
600mg: I'll take a nap and have a headache bad enough to almost puke
800mg: I'll have a headache so bad I'll puke if I don't drink some coffee and take tylenol
1g: Don't want to think about it. I'd drink like 4 cups of coffee and ween from there.

Those are my withdrawal experiences :)

You don't really get addicted to caffeine.

What happens is you build a tolerance to it fairly quickly, and need more and more to get the same effect. One day it's 1 pill, the next it's 2 large coffee's and 2 pills, so to speak.

However once you start drinking/taking large amounts to get the same effect, you also start getting more of the adverse effects like anxiety, stomach trouble, rapid heartrate, etc.

But none of the extra desired alertness effects really. Then all your left with is the withdrawal.

IMO if you drink coffee for a long time, the withdrawal seems less severe. I guess you adapt to the trough's in drinking caffeine as well. The thing is, I'd still get the phyical side effects like a bad headache, but not necessarily feel tired.

Coffee makes you more alert, motivated, and just a more useful person in general. If there's one thing to be addicted too, it's coffee.

That is why I am not addicted. Yes I get the headache without coffee sometimes, but an addiction is something you want to stop but cannot, where as... why the hell would I want to stop drinking coffee for the above reasons? ;) (I don't drink too much... anywhere from 8-30oz a day)

because you build up a tolerance?

I stopped consuming caffeine on a regular basis about 6 months ago... not only do I sleep better, but on the rare occasions that I *do* drink coffee, I get absolutely wired.
