I swim well enough not to drown. Some people only run when chased... I only swim if the boat sinks.

I can do most all of that in the same set, then unless I cramp up I should be able to swim out another mile on top of that.

I swim well, but I never quite figured out those flip turns. Only stroke I might have a problem with is butterfly and that's just because it's exhausting.

well, your correct about the avatar thing. [rofl] 😀

I'm an excellent swimmer and longtime surfer. I don't get in the water as much as I like, but I keep myself in good shape, so I can pull all that off easily.

I'm not a fan of the various strokes though, I'd have to be motivated with goodies and whatnot to actually perform them.

Poll crits you for 50,395 points of damage
You have been slain by Poll

Seriously though, you could have asked us to rate our overall swimming 1-5

I feel at home in the water but don't practice different strokes and such, though I could probably do them if asked.

I still don't get how someone can not be able to swim. Maybe its just becasue I could swim for as far back in life as I can remember. But i mean honestly, how can you not swim 100m like in the poll I know I could at the very least do that by age 7 since thats when I started competatively swimming, but likey by age 5 I could swim that distance. I guess if you were never near water then maybe. But like for example this summer I went running and had gone about 10 miles and was pretty tired, so instead of runnign the 10 miles back to my house I jsut swam across the Tennesse river and let the current bring me back. So where is the option for being able to swim a mile after having ran 10 on here 😛?

I started swimming at age 23 -- i.e. about two months ago. I can now complete most of the things on my poll except butterfly and flip turns.

When I hear comments like this, all I can say is that two months ago I hadn't the faintest clue how to swim, say, freestyle or backstroke... and now I can do both. I was taught. Just like anything else.

Are you telling me at age 5 you just got in the pool for the first time and started swimming lengths? That'd be pretty impressive.

More likely than not, you took classes or had an instructor whether it was a professional or just a family member.

I'm a dancer and I'm always surprised when people can't dance -- but then I remember back when I first started, the painful awkwardness, the frustration. Swimming's much the same thing. It's muscle memory. It is LEARNED.

What I don't get is when people say they can swim but they don't do any of the formal strokes. (See a few posts back.) There are only so many ways to propel yourself in the water. If you're not doing the formal strokes, then you're probably doing something LIKE one of the formal strokes, but poorly, which means that while you may be comfortable in the water, you're being very inefficient.

Anyway, having learned to swim at age 23, I can say that I love the water now... which is a complete reversal of being afraid of it for the two previous decades.
