I was also following up with the "parents money" theme started by this reply:

but as you can see.. he did the whole thing practically from scratch!

That's nuts... crazy MITers and their parents with money. :D

I love how he completely modded a leased car. :D

Actually, my 'nuts' comment was about someone doing all that to a new BMW... and only because "he can afford" to, on a leased vehicle, no less. It wasn't meant to say anything about his talent and what he accomplished in the end. You know, nuts as in crazy in the head.

Would you consider it equally 'nuts' if it was a high school kid with brand new leased Kia that was wired with a integrated HTPC into from scratch with $100 in Radioshack parts? Or does it not command the same towering presence as when someone with a MIT label with endless money does it to a BMW?

Many people buy Corvettes and Ferraris and modify and turbo them and void their warranty the first day they get it home, so I guess this just doesn't seem out of the ordinary to me. *shrug*

Actually, there is something "NUTS" and "INSANE" about it. The guy took a $25k 4 door sedan and dumped probably $20k into it plus time spent on his own and came away with a $25k 4 door sedan.

That doesn't make it any more "NUTS" and "INSANE" than if he had done with a $9,000 sedan; especially one with a potentially less standardized serial protocol. I doubt the addition of a few connectors for seat heaters and back up cameras threw him off by much...

But yeah the only thing nuts about it is the waste of money, but it's no different than people who put $10,000 rims on a $500 car. At least in this case he gained buckets of useful info.

Oh, and BMW actually makes an M3 sedan now, like they did in the late 90s, so double PWNAGE!!!

Lost me here, what does that have to do with anything and why is it pwnage?

It's pwnage of the guy who spent all this time and money doing the conversion. Not you numbnuts. :D;)

Ah didn't realize that was the purpose of the conversion. I paid the most attention to the PC installation since thats what the topic was in regards to. Doubt he cares much though, he'll just buy a new M3 sedan and take it apart too

Diggin the ITBs on that M3 engine though, talk about no flow restriction.

let me try Carson Lexus to see if they have replacement.
basically, i will get an armrest replacement and play around with that. i dont want to play around with the armrest i have now. :)

I'd suggest checking out Toyota documents for engine and computer stuff, but unfortunately something like seats and arm rests are probably specific to Lexus.

As for the laptop mount, just do whatever you need to do out of whatever mounts or brackets you can find or make no matter how ugly. Then get a leather boot made or just mold a fiberglass shell around it and have an upholstery shop stick some stitched leather over it that matches the car for a nice clean OEM look.

Yeah, I barely looked at the PC install actually. He totally hacked up the interior of that car and I thought it looked like shit.

The motor swap was interesting but a complete waste of time and money.

It's not even his car. It's leased. The fact that his parents leased it and had it shipped to him at school where he completely modified it into an ugly ricer reeks of excess, which most people just find distasteful.

You think I'd call someone mentally crazy for spending $100 modding their Kia?

Yes I'd call someone crazy for taking apart their Ferrari. I don't know what's so hard to understand here.

I see, it has to do with how much money is involved. I guess people who own Ferrari's or even BMWs aren't allowed or expected to modify their cars like everyone else ;)

My idea of "securing" my laptop in my car is to hold it down on the passenger seat with one hand while I modulate my steering inputs right to the edge of traction with the other.

The g-force will keep it planted until you have to stop or turn ;P

I drive a mk1 MR2. Plenty of G-force in every direction EXCEPT against the seat back. I need the twisties to bring out the potential of this car.

And yes, I HAVE done the whole "hold-the-backpack-to-the-seat-with-one-hand-while-taking-a-tight-turn-with-tires-squealing" bit.

Ever thought of a 20v ITB swap?

Very often...just don't have the money or time right now.

Also the 3SGTE swap...which is trickier.

Again, I called the guy crazy for buying an "expensive" car and taking it completely apart. I think someone needs to get off the money vs. no-money difference and talent.
