How to keep yourself awake during non-physical activity?

Does this happen to any of you? Whenever I do non-physical activity such as reading, studing, or sitting here at my computer desk at work, within a short period of time I begin to get very sleepy. This is very hindering especially during studing or here at work. I found that sitting up, changing position, stretching is some help but not much. Any ideas?

something other than caffeine? I don't touch the stuff so it has maximum potency right when I take it before a test

I think in the medical world they call that boredom.

Unfortunately there's probably not much you can do about it when you're working/studying.

hmm... how about drinks like red bull, powerade etc?
You need to get a wooden chair which will make you sit upright. Try that out, it will work for sure.

Put my wife in the passenger seat of a car or on a couch with an educational book and she's asleep in 3 minutes flat.

It's a terminal illness called boredom.

Exactly! Start reading Playboy or Maxim instead of Newsweek or Time! :D Can't say I've ever wanted to drift off after reading the articles...

Mind over matter.

Combat pilots on normal stimulants are about 27% effective after 72 hours of awake time, 67% effective on provigil (there is a reason it's becoming the alertness drug of choice for our, the french, and other special forces)

coffee and run around every hour. stand while you do your studying/work/etc. jump around. this is how i study. work out daily. it helps. makes me sleep less and keeps me fresher throughout the day mentally.

Get enough sleep at night. End of story.

Failing that, you could try clothespins on your sensitive areas.
