I'm seriously considering this...

It's OTC in many countries including Mexico (I live in MX as well, so I usually shop for prescriptions there). It was submitted for OTC approval here to the FDA in '05, they are still waiting for the approval (e.g. you'll need to be near Canada or Mexico, or have a doctor write you a script, but its non narcotic and not addictive so most dr's will do so if simply asked)

I'd eat a lot less of my prescribed amphetamines if provigil was OTC.

Amphetamine works great for keeping one up.

I'm going to ask my doctor if he can prescribe it to me.

Asking for specific scheduled drugs is a guaranteed way not to get them and a pretty surefire way of being labeled a drug seeker in your files.

He's not going to want to prescribe it, because insurance companies discourage it's prescription as it costs an arm and a leg to buy. Hundreds and hundreds of dollars per bottle.

Really? Damn :(

Well, i think i do have a valid argument though. A few months ago, i got in a car accident (my fault). I literally fell asleep at the wheel. I work pretty long hours. Plus i have trouble focusing sometimes too.

Not true, are you sure you have any idea what your talking about? I haven't checked the cost here but mailorder it's certainly not hundreds per bottle, and in MX its about $30. Provigil is scripted about as often as ambien (probably more), it's not narcotic or addictive (so he's not a drug 'seeker' those are usually looking for pain meds).

reading books puts me to sleep in a minute. I can read anything on a computer screen though. I think I've made it through school without ever finishing a single novel.

I know exactly what I'm talking about.
I have a friend who is prescribed it for narcalepsy with good insurance and his fill isn't in the usual breakdown of generic/common brandname/rare brandname price tiering. His insurance pays a percentage of the bottle(70%?) and he pays the rest which works out to be around $80 or so.
Mail-order(especially from outside state lines) is an entirely different beast.
On a bit of research it appears that getting generic provigil(modafinil) is possible to get as of a few months ago, which negates what I have said previously.

And yes, asking for a scheduled drug by name is a 95% guarantee to not get what you ask for.

No, asking for Vicodin, Perceset, etc by name isnt' going to get you what you ask for. Provigil is class 3 (or is it class 1, I get em confused), but its the same as asking for Ambien. I've never had a doctor not right a script for something I've asked for, if you have a regular dr they know your not a drug seeker (I guess it may be different if you randomly walk into a clinic and ask, but even here they'de be as hesitant to write the script as they would be for Nexium)
