You know, when I consider how to get rid of obsessive thoughts, porn is not the first thing that comes to mind. :hmm:

I had lunch with old friends - the conversation happened to remind me of something uncomfortable that happened way back in college. I've been obsessed with it all day.

It's driving me nuts.

What do you do when you get something stupid stuck in your brain?

Already tried watching porn, listening to music and counting down backwards from 260 in base 13.

I'm losing my mind - and I don't have much mind left to lose?

Loose your prejudice about it.

Prejudice is part of the "prefetching " mechanism of the human brain.
As long as you already have an opinion about it (No matter what kind of opinion...), that thought will stick in your brain.

As a bad analogy :

Dram memory needs to be refreshed by reading and writing to it. But when you read from it, you must write to that dram cell to refresh the logic state.
In the brain, this is exactly the same principle. When you think about something, having an opinion and emotional charge about it, will keep the thought in existence.

Every time it pops up, think about something else not related.
After a while it will weaken but it takes some time and practice to loose your prejudice. However, it will empty your mind. I can promise you that.

Think of extreme versions of your thought. Blow it hugely out of proportion.
After some extreme exaggerations, the true memory loses its value and you can move on.

For example: You can't forget the night your friend kissed your boyfriend. Turn that into "They made out, then had sex in the middle of a crowded area, everyone saw it even the news. It was on CNN. The encounter left her pregnant with sextuplets, 3 of which were born with elephantitis. The boyfriend announced his mistake on a live interview with Larry King."

I know it sounds crazy, and that is the point.

This is a type of therapy for people who have irrational fears or memories.

Wow. I'll try this next time.

Uh yeah I'd think it would make the problem worse, but maybe that's me.

It's very individual. It would help some, and hurt others. If her problem was ongoing, it's something I'd consider just to try it, but I wouldn't give a blanket statement saying it would help.

Put a rubber band around your wrist. Every time you catch yourself thinking about it, give the rubber band a good snap on the inside of your wrist.

Yes, it will hurt. Eventually, your brain will learn to avoid thoughts that lead to physical pain. Crude, but effective.

It's funny how many people are telling op to "jerk off" and "have sex with a woman" while not realizing Nanette IS a woman.
