how to get rid of obsessive thoughts?

I had lunch with old friends - the conversation happened to remind me of something uncomfortable that happened way back in college. I've been obsessed with it all day.

It's driving me nuts.

What do you do when you get something stupid stuck in your brain?

Already tried watching porn, listening to music and counting down backwards from 260 in base 13.

I'm losing my mind - and I don't have much mind left to lose?

Play games. Helps me a lot when I am stressed out. By games I do not mean those sissy Farmville type games

Base 13 is important, crucial to really understanding what is going on.

Arthur pulls random letters from a bag, but only gets the sentence "What do you get if you multiply six by nine?" "Six by nine. Forty two."

It only works in base 13.

IMO mental health is closely linked with physical health. A good workout is great for anxiety. I would also look into biofeedback which can be thought of as the modern equivalent of meditation.

I was going to say porn and/or alcohol, but it looks like you got the first one covered.

Alcohol to get you to sleep, then sleep on it, and it'll be easier to block out.

Think of extreme versions of your thought. Blow it hugely out of proportion.
After some extreme exaggerations, the true memory loses its value and you can move on.

For example: You can't forget the night your friend kissed your boyfriend. Turn that into "They made out, then had sex in the middle of a crowded area, everyone saw it even the news. It was on CNN. The encounter left her pregnant with sextuplets, 3 of which were born with elephantitis. The boyfriend announced his mistake on a live interview with Larry King."

I know it sounds crazy, and that is the point.

This is a type of therapy for people who have irrational fears or memories.

1. Post details about said experience on ATOT
2. Let ATOT make fun of it, while a minority of posters offer real advice.
3. Wish you never posted on ATOT
4. Get pissed at ATOT for blowing it way out of proportion
5. Realize how stupid said experience was to be obsessed with and forget that it ever happened
6. Move on with life

In short, ATOT is here to help.
