How to dismantle a live bullet?

JulesMaximus

No Lifer
Any ideas? I want to take the bullet out of the casing but not having any luck.

Other than the obvious of putting it in the gun and pulling the trigger does anyone have any suggestions?

A bullet puller is the proper tool for the job. A pair of pliers would probably work too.

Or if you weren't a manlet you could just use your fingers :colbert:

Put the casing (gently) in a vice...use pliers to remove the bullet.

It's highly unlikely that the round will go off in the vice...but I don't know if you're trying to save the casing or the bullet....there are different ways to accomplish this, depending on your desired outcome.

Yeah, I'm reading that this is really the only safe way to do it. Pliers are not recommended.

I don't have a bullet puller so I'm just going to forget about this. It just doesn't seem safe.

What can happen? As long as you don't create heat or sparks, and don't bang on the primer, there's little that could go wrong.

I remember taking apart shot gun bullets for fun at camp with an axe. I'd try to get the cut between the metal and plastic part to separate it and get all the BBs out. Thinking back, I'm lucky I had a decent aim and never made one go off.

Vice with rubber grips on the body, pliers to pull the lead out.
So long as you dont bang the primer, you are actually quite safe. Have something to catch the powder. Sprinkle it on your lawn, it wont kill it if you just open ONE bullet. If you've got a bunch for some reason, take them to the local range and ask if they want them. If nothing else they will have a sturdy steel box to toss them.

What you will need to accomplish this task:

*A gun
*Some needle nose pliers

Difficulty rating */**

Put the bullet in a gun hold the barrel to your head, pull the trigger then use the needle nose pliers to pull the bullet out of your skull.

Put the bullet in a vice then lean over it while pulling with pliers.

What could go wrong?

Get two guns. Load both of them then point them at each other and fire. They'll cancel each other out leaving you with two perfect condition bullets.

unless the primer is depressed in some way, the round won't go off at all.

smokeless powder doesn't ignite when compressed, even compressed through shock. that's one thing that separates it from black powder, which will. so if you're not concerned about the bullet or the case, then simply using pliars and a vise will pull them apart.

if you're using crimped rounds, then of course it's gonna be a bit harder to pull the bullets out.

When my dad was young he and his brothers would shoot pellets at the primers of shotgun shells until they went off

I can't believe they all have all their limbs

Right, just like how if you take two cars, drive them at each other at 60 mph and crash head on, both cars will be perfectly intact because their momentum cancels out. :colbert:

Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. So the action of them hitting and crashing has an opposite reaction of not crashing so it sounds ok to me but if you think you know more than Isaac Newton lets go ahead and call stephen hawking and tell him everything we believe is a lie

you could probably rig something up to accomplish it if you were crafty. a block of wood with a hole drilled that fit the casing snug with ample room for the bullet to drop out and something fit into the rim to keep it from falling through would probably accomplish the same thing but i take no responsibility if the round goes off while attempting it
