How to disable VSync with 27.42 drivers?

At least, I think it's a VSync issue...

I resintalled my motherboard drivers as part of resolving my system hanging on "Windows is shutting down", and then updated to the 27.42 drivers. Reinstalled coolbits, as I am now running at 200/460, and downloaded 3DMark2001SE to see the difference in tests and score. I got a bit shocked to see I had dropped from 7321 marks to 6110 in 3DMark2001SE and 6001 in 3DMark2001 (5645 and 5486 at stock speeds)! So I go into my properties pane and check the Direct3D VSync settings as I'd been dumb enough to forget about it before, set them to "always off" and ran the tests again - same result! So I went to make double sure, and found that the VSync setting had reverted to a blank box with a dropdown of "auto-detect", "always off" and "always on". Chose "always off", clicked apply then OK, back to desktop then back to settings - blank box again! Argh! Geforce Tweak won't work with any drivers newer than 23.11, and neither will NVMax (tells me it doesn't detect a Geforce or Geforce 2, well duh!). What program works with these drivers, and am I barking up the right tree to begin with?

Specs:

AthlonXP1900+
Asus A7N266-E (drivers dated 22/01/02, AGP Aperature set to 128MB)
512MB DDR RAM
Creative Geforce 3 Ti200 @ 200/460 (27.42 drivers)
61.5Gb 7200rpm primary HDD
15.1Gb 5400rpm secondary HDD
Panasonic 16x/40x DVD
Philips CDDVDRW2010 combo drive
Realmagic Hollywood Plus DVD decoder card
Smartlink 56k PCI modem
Windows XP Home
PCLine USB Tournament gamepad (uses win xp generic drivers)

Thanks for the suggestion!

Unfortunately, no luck though :(

I downloaded the new NVMax, ran 3DMark2001SE and my score had gone down to 4961!!!!!

Tried setting AGP to 4x instead of auto (the only setting different to anything I had done before) and 3DMark/any 3d game crashed within 5 mins. Trying games (Medal of Honor, Max Payne, Serious Sam 2) with AGP set to 4x in NVMax resulted in much lower framerate than before NVMax, so I uninstalled it and everything has gone back to as it was before! (but 6110 marks still, not the nice before of 7321...)

Any other ideas anyone?

Update - not so good, after rebooting after uninstalling NVMax I can't run 3DMark at all (stock speed or overclocked) and every time I shut down or reboot I now get the "Windows has recovered from a serious error" with all the errors in "7f"... what has this done to my PC? :(

Go to desktop, right-click, properties, settings, advanced, Geforce3, Additional Properties, OpenGL and OR Direct 3D settings.

Should be there

Use Riva Tuner to disable vsync in both OpenGL and Direct3D. However the 27.42 drivers are stuck at 60 Hz and none of the refresh rate fixes work on them so you should go back to earlier drivers.

Again, thanks for all the suggestions :)

The Direct3D properties page gives me an option where I can select "auto" "always on" or "always off", but no matter what I choose it loses the setting as soon as I have clicked OK and gone back in again.

I have now reverted to the 27.30 drivers, but still can't complete either 3DMark2001 or 2001SE, and am still getting the "windows has recovered from a serious error" upon startup.

The details of the error are as follows:

BCCode : 7f BCP1 : 0000000D BCP2 : 00000000 BCP3 : 00000000
BCP4 : 00000000 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 0_0 Product : 768_1

Does anyone know what this relates to?

Untrue. A simple edit to the .inf file and the refresh rate fix works just fine.

Things are getting worse :(
I had been testing with Medal of Honor and all was fine, booted up Star Wars: Starfighter and it said my card couldn't do the resolution/colour depth - at every resolution and colour depth it would offer!

Uninstalled/reinstalled 3DMark2001SE and it said it hadn't detected a graphics adaptor....

Wound up going back to last known good configuration, 3DMark and Starfighter run OK, but 3DMark down to 4900s again (Dragothic and Nature tests go into single figure fps (high detail Dragothic that is) where Dragothic was originally 50+ and Nature 25-30!)

Even with this last known good I have got an error every time I start up/reboot, but different this time:

BCCode : 1000008e BCP1 : C0000005 BCP2 : BFA5B284 BCP3 : F1B9CB64
BCP4 : 00000000 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 0_0 Product : 768_1

I've also spotted in device manager an unknown device under imaging, but I don't have any imaging devices attached to my PC! If I try and uninstall it fails saying the device is required to boot up the PC...

Help!

Um, that "infinite loop" thing... :(

Following is a list of facts about, and possible fixes for the infamous infinite loop problem.

Firstly, the facts:

- This happens on all manufacturers chipsets (ALi, VIA, SiS, AMD Intel). It is NOT a chip manufacturer's fault

- This happens on all graphics card manufacturers, and seems to be limited to AGP (with very few exceptions). These have included nVidia, 3dfx, ATi and 3DLabs.

- It is limited strictly to the Windows NT Kernel, and happens about 98% of the time on windowsXP. Reports have been heard that it also happens on win2k, but it is rarer in this case.

- As of the time of writing, there is no all emcompassing fix, and finding a solution is very dependant on your system configuration.

Now...possible solutions:

- Try a different set of drivers. What works will depend on your system. If you are using an nvidia card, some report the problem to be fixed using drivers 23.XX, however, in some cases these make the problem worse! The 27.XX drivers work in a similar way, and have fixed it for some, and made it worse for others. You should try each and find which is the best for you, even if it just reduces the frequency of the errors. Of course, if you have a different card, you'll need to investigate which set is best for you.

- Install the VIA 4.37A (or latest) drivers if you have a VIA chipset, and install any of the latest drivers for your chipset if it is not VIA.

- Install the VIA latency patch (if you have a VIA chipset)

- Disable Fast Writes and SideBand Addressing (In both BIOS and any tweak utilities)

- Upgrade your system BIOS to the latest version.

- Reduce your desktop colour settings to 16bit colour

- Reduce your AGP speed to 2x

- Reduce your AGP aperture to 64MB or less

- Try increasing I/O voltage by one of two values in your BIOS.

- Try reseating your card in it's slot. Have it pushed up as far as you can without any possible damage.

- If you have installed/enabled EXPERTool (for Gainward Cards - sometimes found on other cards too), disable it.

- If you are overclocking...stop. If not, try reducing your bus speed.

I hope this can give some useful information to all of the troubled users out there.

Untrue. A simple edit to the .inf file and the refresh rate fix works just fine.

That's not a simple edit, it's a replacement of the entire INF file. I'd be very hesitant to do something like that.

Have you tried the nvreffix ready 27.42 drivers?

That looks better but I think I'll wait for Riva Tuner RC11 instead. :)

Well you're more than welcome to be "hesistant" and while you are I'll be using the newer drivers.
Ciao.

Seemingly fixed now, after I formatted and reinstalled XP - 7400+ Marks on 3DMark 2001SE at 200/460 (6884 at stock speed), although have a loss of performance problem if I install the refresh rate fix - will post in a separate thread!
