Lol... no it won't... not with onboard video... come on... do you even own Flight Sim? It's fairly demanding with all the scenery... and 2004 has some enhanced new weather features that will take even more power.

maybe go a little over budget and get a 4200 and you're set.

Memory: 256 MB DDR SDRAM 266MHz (1 DIMM) + Windows XP = JUNK for MS Flight also... now you're up to $150 extra to fix up that computer so it's able to run games... that's the problem... he's set his price limit so low that he can't get anything better than what he's got.

buy the dell and upgrade the video card.

if he's not 100% in favor of you building him a system, DON'T DO IT!!!
let him call India every time he has a problem, not you.

maybe i'm the one with the vision problem, but where exactly do you see $150 extra? the only thing you need is a $70 ti4200 (even less if you buy it used.) 256mb of ram is already included in the configuration above. with the price of $440 that only puts you $10 over your limit. woohoo, big deal. and winXP = junk for ms flight? yah ok buddy. let's see....microsoft made their latest flight simulator so that it COULDN'T work properly on their latest operating system. sure.

here are the sys specs required, straight from microsoft:

Windows PC
2000/XP ? 128 MB Ram
98/Me ? 64 MB Ram
Processor:450 MHz minimum
Available hard drive space:1.8 GB
DirectX 9 or later (included with Microsoft Flight Simulator: A Century of Flight)
Video card: 8 MB/3D with DirectX 7.0 or later drivers
Other: mouse, joystick/yoke, sound card, speakers/headphones
Online/multiplayer: 56.6 kbps modem or LAN

It seems to me that you are not going to listen to what anyone says here. Fine, be that way. It will be your problem when that hard drive that you put in goes, or the monitor has dead pixels, or the mouse becomes unplugged without his knowledge. Your ass will be over there.

Tell him like it is. For $500 he can get a decent functional office computer, and for $700 he can get one to play flgiht sim games. For $500 his emachien won't play flight sim, either. Buy a 4200 or whatever the latest Dell his, go with one of the lower Radeons and 512 MB RAM and ON-SITE, aka NOT MAIL-IN, support. If he is too cheap for that then tell him that he won't be able to play flight sims.

Supporting family PCs suck. Especially because they are looking for someone to help them and if you have to tell them to call individual component manufacturers, they will always blame another component. A Dell is a Dell is a Dell - just buy it and be done with it.

Appearantly you are new to this, but you aren't going to listen to what anyone says. You are just as bad as your uncle is in your pride. You complain he won't listen about how crappy e-machines are, and you want to build him a custom one, but you won't listen when everyone tells you that that's not a good idea, either. First of all, a custom-built PC WILL NOT COST ANYTHING LESS THAN A DELL WHEN THE DELL IS ON SALE. When Dell puts coupons and stuff on their web site, it doesn't cost any more than what you can build yourself, and in many cases, it will be cheaper. And if it breaks, you have ONE number you can tell HIM to call and they will take care of it. If you build it, you will have to do all of that.

Pot -> Kettle -> Black describes this thread very well.

Oh my god people... do you not know that Windows XP requires more RAM than any other version of Windows?!?!?! Hence my equation

256 MB RAM + Windows XP = JUNK for MS Flight

MS Flight requires a lot of RAM to run properly... and if you believe the minimum specs printed on the box or the website are anywhere near what it takes to create a good gaming experience, you obviously don't play games.

Uncle's head is stuck firmly up his rear.

Lets see, I really want to be able to top out at 160mph, and run low 10's in the 1/4 mile, but i've only got $5000 to spend on a car........

Don't want to do that because that's where most of his problems are coming from... I bet he's installed and uninstalled stuff at least 500 times in the past year.

Scandisk, reg cleaner, defrag, ghost in that order. Either that or go hunting for drivers (I'm assuming you don't have a recovery disk)

/edit of course if you want to do it right it is clean install, I do a clean install about every 30-45 days (well I make an image of a clean install using drive image, then install programs on my computer and test them out, if I like them I put the image back on and add the program and update the image, keeps the system clean, and easy recovery.) but too many people these days look for the easy way out...

Maybe I should tell him to get a Mac, lol...

*EDIT* Yes, he has the recovery disc... but for some reason he hasn't used it... next time I'm over there maybe I'll help him back up his important stuff on a CD and then start over from scratch.

Oh, by the way... does Dell sell computers WITHOUT monitors? His 19 inch Sony is just fine, and I doubt he'd even want to replace it... if I could find one without a monitor that would knock $50-100 off the price that might make it worth it even if I had to upgrade the RAM and video card.

*EDIT* Finally found a package that will let me choose no monitor.

Review of Microsoft Flight Sim 2004:

"Finally, we have not forgotten how many resources Combat Flight Simulator 3 needed, so it was with some apprehension that we ran the new Microsoft game. We were glad to find that the version we tested was smooth and stable on a "normal" machine (Athlon XP 1600+, GeForce 4200, 256 MB), so we suppose the developers have optimized the code correctly."

Seems like 256 MB is plenty to run this program.

Not sure I trust THG... but thanks for the link... too bad they didn't give any information on the detail settings... cause even with Flight 2002 I can bring my Ti4200 @ Ti4600 speeds to a crawl by playing with detail settings.
