Your excuse makes no sense - you could have just done a clean install off any OEM disc, and used the CD key that your laptop manufacturer provided instead of going out of your way to use a pirated CD key.

You can't use an OEM key to install a retail copy of windows.

thats not the point if he had a OEM copy of XP he would have HAD A CD KEY for it

He didn't have an OEM copy of XP. Read the thread, he said he only had a restore cd. Therefore he had to have used a Retail cd to install XP since end users can't buy OEM cds.

omg!! this is a simple matter but why are you all digging so deep? wtf over!

I have a pirated winxp cd & key. I also have the restoration cd for the laptop along with the legit cd-key.

at the time of the reformat and install the clean windows xp. I didn't bother to look for the OEM cd-key that came with the laptop. I just use what's right next to me at the time. and that's the pirated cd-key.

all i wanted to know is how can you go to the registry and change the pirated cd key that's on the laptop right now to the OEM (That came with the laptop and I do have it) one so i can install SP2.

SHEES!!

Hmmm ... this is an Operating System Post. I recommend in the future, any posts about Operating Systems should be in the forum called "Operating Systems". This is the "off topic" forum. It is for posts that do not belong in any of the other forums. Posts that belong in the other forums do not belong in this forum.

Im trying to install windows XP SP2 but it won't let me because i used a copied cd key to installed windows xp to my laptop. Reason i did this because i hate having all those extra programs that come with the laptop and want to wipe everything off and install just windows instead of using their restoration cd.

anyway. I have the laptop original cd key with me. I just wanted to know how can i change to it so that i can download and install SP2.

Call Microsoft, give them the key you lawfully own and ask them how to proceed. Don't post here seeking assistance with piracy.
