Can anyone help me out?

Im trying to install windows XP SP2 but it won't let me because i used a copied cd key to installed windows xp to my laptop. Reason i did this because i hate having all those extra programs that come with the laptop and want to wipe everything off and install just windows instead of using their restoration cd.

anyway. I have the laptop original cd key with me. I just wanted to know how can i change to it so that i can download and install SP2.

Your excuse makes no sense - you could have just done a clean install off any OEM disc, and used the CD key that your laptop manufacturer provided instead of going out of your way to use a pirated CD key.

it makes perfect sense. The restoration cd that comes with the laptop, it erase your hard drive, reinstall windows and a whole crapload of proprietary applications that cannot be removed. On top of that, it create another partition that i don't want.

So, i said screw all that, i'm just going to use my own windows xp cd.

Your story sounds like horsesh!t.
Go buy it.
Actually, no it's completely sensible to me. When's the last time you set up a store-bought system? All of the crap they put on there is ridiculous, and then they refuse to give you a full copy of Windows, and Windows alone?

You can't use an OEM key to install a retail copy of windows.

Not what im talking about, im talking about "it won't let me because i used a copied cd key to installed windows xp to my laptop."
That means pirated, or not his...

I installed my own student issued xp on my laptop for that reason, its a great reason. But no reason to use a pirated copy and then ask us for help in finding out what it was.

You can't use an OEM key to install a retail copy of windows.

thats not the point if he had a OEM copy of XP he would have HAD A CD KEY for it

"Im trying to install windows XP SP2 but it won't let me because i used a copied cd key to installed windows xp to my laptop."

Now he wants to change it back to a *legit* cd key so he can download sp2. He has been using a pirated copy.
