How to avoid nail fungus?

Well, is there anything I can do to prevent nail fungus on the fingers?

I already wash my hands often out of habit. I don't know what else to do. I don't want that anytime soon.

To describe it, it's kind of gross. He has one thumbnail that is really thick and brittle.
He sometimes scrapes off some crust beneath the fingernail with a key or a pen cap.

-edit--I doubt if it's from minimal contact from just an office job.

Keep your area clean (no papers or shit you might touch near his side), and make sure you wash the tips of your fingers specifically when you wash your hands (nothing hardcore, just run over them with some extra soap). Other than that, there might be a few preventative creams you could use if you're really paranoid. Not much else I can think of...

Weird that he has it on his finger. The toe variety is much harder to get rid of. Just keep the area dry, properly trimmed, and clean. You shouldnt have anything to worry about

Ok, don't consider this the definitive answer but I believe for fungus to spread it has to be a damp / moist area. IE, the most common way of passing a toe fungus is from a poorly draining tub / shower, where 1 person would stand in the water and then another person would be standing in that same water. I would guess in the case of hands, a poorly draining sink where you put your hands into after his. Since that scenario is pretty far fetched, I don't think you have too much to worry about, but good luck.

Nail fungus can be a bitch to get rid of, especially when on your toes. Odd that he has it on his hands though, I'd definitely be actively seeking remedies for that.

I'm not sure about preventing it, but I've used vicks vabor rub in the past to get rid of nail fungus.

That worked? What were your treatment procedures?

Yeah, I was shocked too. I went to the doctor and they gave me some herbal ointment that never really did much. Then someone told me to use vicks vabor rub. I'm thinking, this is never going to work. It was on my big toe nail. Kept it cut as short as possible, applied vicks to the top of the nail and surrounding cuticle before I went to bed, also as much under the nail as I could get. It cleared up in a couple weeks.

Edit: The best is when I put it on in the morning, because I forgot at night or something. I'd be leaving the house and wonder, "Why is my foot tingling?".

I'll have to remember to pick up some Vicks, see how that works out. I've had some nasty toe nail fungus ever since Basic.

I was surprised that Vicks actually seems to be working fairly quickly, have to see what a few more days does.

Ingredients:

Camphor 4.8%
Eucalyptol 1.2%
Menthol 2.6%

Cedarleaf oil
Nutmeg oil
special Petrolatum
Thymol
Turpentine oil

------

Those compounds, particularly eucalyptus oil, have anti-bacterial anti-fungal properties. They're what makes Listerine taste so bad but work so well.

I'm not taking pictures, don't ask. :p

The internet already has its share of filth, it doesn't need my fungus infected toe nails on it.

Good lord that is awesome. I have to keep this in mind. My toe nails seem like they are in the early stages of fungus, but it's my fear of it getting to me.
