How the hell can manufacturers sell a car without A/C? **Update** The real answer makes itself known ;)

A/C - I'll admit is getting close to neccessary, esp. if you've ever spent time in a traffic jam. But power windows, locks, etc - neg. In the GMs I'm looking at, pretty much "the less powered the better" - since I don't want to be paying half the purchase price after the warranty runs out and the locks/windows/mirror/CD player fails. That, and $400 for a CD player is criminal. 😛

I have never used A/C even in the few cars I've driven that had it. I much prefer opening the windows. AC is too artificial for me.

That doesn't hardly work and also causes it to overheat pretty bad, when it's not overheating in stop and go anyway LMAO.. $1 million for that

 
I can do without power window, doorlocks, etc., but in here in TX, it's warm enough to use the A/C at least 8 months out of the year.

Truer words were never spoken... especially when the temps are high 90's for most of the summer.
 
Why should it come standard? You woudl still pay for them, and not everyone needs all that stuff. Your argument makes no sense.
 
First thing we did when we went Spec Miata racing was remove the AC.

Years ago, you used to be able to order muscle cars without AC for that very reason.

I wish I could buy truck with vinyl floor, leather seats, no radio, power windows but not locks because my Ford accuators costed $250 plus broken knukles to replace. I like to hose out the interior so a drain plug would be nice too... Are you buying?

Ha, aside from the leather part it sounds like a pickup I used to drive around during one of my HS summer jobs. Speedometer didn't work (it'd quit somewhere around 300,000 miles), but that old Ford F250 diesal would fire up every day and take it's beating without a wimper.

With the power washer it only took about 20 seconds to clean out the interior 🙂
 
ive never had AC in any of my cars, well three, and it's been there it's just never worked, but even in the cars i do drive in which it does work, i simply don't use it
 
For those people that say they've never had A/C in their cars, what are you driving? Are you driving bargain basement econoboxes b/c most cars these days come with it standard.

I'm driving a '93 taurus, and it just doesn't work (insert domestic car joke here). My dad could fix it, but I don't really care, as I never used it anyways. I live in MN btw.

Pretty much every (sub)compact doesn't. It's CDN$1200 on GM vehicles. 😛

1977 Marquis - Didn't exist?
1987 Vandura - Busted. Never fixed. I like the wind in my face from an open window better.
1989 Turbovan - Needed recharging, but I removed it to make room for the bigass intercooler that I'm gonna put in one of these days
1995 Buick Century - Havn't tried it. Too f'n cold.

Hmm, I used to live in Baltimore, MD and go back to visit often. I've used the A/C there all the time, especially in the summer.
 
I agree AC should be standard (hell I thought it was too!).

Power windows I would rather NOT have though. They are one of the most frequent things to break/wear down, and I don't want to be unable to open the window because the stupid window motor ran out of lubricant or whatever.

actually, alot of them do. you see them all over NorCal. i had 2 hondas w/o AC and i did fine. the diff between cali heat and texas heat is that there is alot more humidity in texas. in california its only truely HOT a few days in the summer... driving with the windows down is makes it breezy enough to get by. in texas, though, i'd die w/o AC (though i did survive an entire summer while my AC was broken)

Well, if it was a BMW E36 M3, I'd take the roll up windows... though I do admit it is a giant PITA to roll the passenger window down, but then you're supposed to be using your A/C?? I wouldn't mind a non-powered moonroof/sunroof and I generally try NOT to use my A/C since running the compressor saps so much power out of my car.
 
I've have it in my Mustang ('92), but in the 11 years I've owned the car, I have not used it once. Now that I need to replace my heater core, which requires draining and disassembly of the A/C components combined with the fact I've got the old (and expensive) R12, I think I' mjust gonna take it out all together. I'll be shedding some weight, drag on the motor, and it will give me more room to work on the motor with all that crap out of there. The weather here in NH really only get's hot in August.

That being said, when I went to southern Florida, I was thankful for A/C in the rental. 🙂

A/C
Power Windows/Locks
FM/Cassette/CD, whatever...as long as you have some tunes😉

A/C = extra and un-necessary weight.
Power Windows/Locks = See A/C.
Radio = Sometimes nice, in sports cars it's pointless since you won't be able to hear it in a true sports car.

The lack of a manual transmission option on many cars is far more concerning to me.
