How should I spend my $200 GC to Newegg?

I am thoroughly underwhelmed with my current upgrade paths; current rig:

Q6600@3.75
8gb memory
2x4890
2x64gb SSDs RAID0

Computer plays BC2 @ 1980x1020 no issues on high, except when a lot of smoke is being generated in my immediate FOV....should I just hold on to the gift card? But...that's just so boring.

Hadn't thought to log it... you think the Q6600 is showing it's age??? :-( But we've been through a lot together!

I was going to say to get an SSD but since you already have two... I dunno, an extra monitor or TV might be fun. Does NewEgg sell good speakers?

Buying actual computer hardware would be a waste with your rig how it is.

I was afraid of that :-( Only real justification I have for upgrading is efficiency, but the upfronts cost would outweigh the benefits for some time.

And, I already have the oldschool Klipsch 5.1 Ultras...they've lasted me forever!

You're about where I was. I picked up an i7-860, new mobo, 16GB RAM, 120GB SSD, GTX460 and OC'd the i7 to 4GHz.

I think that's about it. I don't game much so I'm sure that card will be fine. It should speed up CS5 stuff.

I know Sandy Bridge crap just came out but I didn't see that much of an advantage to it. This was cheaper.

What are your OC settings/temps that you're getting 3.7 out of your Q6600? I bumped mine up to 3.2 and it's stable but it won't go any higher without getting too hot (though I may be a bit conservative with temps).

Is your "(underwater)" tag meaning that you are watercooling?

Hell I had my Q6600 at 3.2 with air cooling and it wasn't bad at all.

Yep. Load right now my hottest core is 48 via CoreTemp (which shows what, Tjunction?). Ambient temp in my apartment is actually a few degrees warmer than usual right now, too, but you get the idea. So obviously I have a good bit of room to heat up before I'd hit any problems, but I don't want to play with it at this point as this is my only computer and I have no cash with which to replace it. :p Still curious as to what settings he's using to hit 3.75.

So, I am in the minority when I define my computer's stability. Is heat an issue when I bench mark it for any length of time? Yes. Is heat (or stability) an issue during any other circumstance? No.

And besides, at this point, if I cook the processor it'd give me an excuse to buy a new one. However, I'm nowhere near those kinds of temps. I like to consider my computer akin to a top fuel dragster. It's great for what I use it for (gaming) and not so great for well...benchmarking.

If you tried driving a top fuel dragster to work, you would (1) run out of fuel before you got there, and (2) blow up the engine.

So go back to mamby pamby land with your wahhh my computer overheats when I run this useless program.

Huh? Placing load on your CPU to determine max temps is just a nice way of looking at "worse case scenario." Excessive heat can, and will, cause damage to a processor. Now I'm really curious as to what your idle/load temps are. :p

Be happy to tell you what they are when I get home... Do you even know what Intel's definition of excessive heat is for the Q6600? Let me tell you, 48 degree core temp isn't even close.

Oh no not at all. 48 is pretty cold, especially for an OC'd chip. I wasn't trying to say my chip is anywhere near "hot." From what I remember, I think MAX Tjunction is like 100C, but that's essentially before the chip will burn itself out. I think the "recommended max" is somewhere around 70-71c .. ie don't run it that hot frequently. So that's what I meant when I said I really do have a lot of room for play if I ever wanted to.

Yes, so the last time I ran OCCT, my Tmaxs were high 60s low 70s. My guess is if I were to do it now it would be a bit higher due to dust, etc.

She idles mid/high 40s if I don't use rmclock to adjust the idle voltage, but I do. When she's idle she's in the high 20s-low 30s. Gaming- low 50s w/ Bad Company 2. I've never seen it higher than that during normal usage.

Send me a PM of course and I'll give you more concrete numbers next time I'm there.

Oh and, my worst case scenario is covered by the lovely "shut down if temp exceeds 70 degrees feature" of my bios. Let's just say, that's never happened (except when I was testing it with OCCT :D)
