I found this particularly illustrative of the current atmosphere.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/ame...tions_2008/7694857.stm

It is a measure of Republican desperation that they are starting to use the argument that America should not place the White House, the Senate and the House of Representatives all in the hands of the Democrats at the same time because that would leave Barack Obama free to exercise power without checks and balances.

It is the kind of argument you deploy only when you are trying to limit the scale of the loss and have given up all hope of winning.
I agree, it's a pretty desperate plead, but shouldn't they instead be cutting their losses, throwing McCain under the bus without any more money, and trying to put effort into keeping some congressional power? It's like they are losing so they go double or nothing.
I think there's a psychological term for this very human condition - can't recall it at the moment.

The unique thing about repugs is how they go down violently kicking and screaming - grabbing and taking all that is not bolted down with them.

I'll bet you were really worried when Bush was elected and he had a Republican Congress. You probably had 2,000 posts on that topic alone, right?

Why are people always so afraid? Afraid of terror, afraid of democrats, afraid of Arabs, afraid of Muslims, always afraid of something. Buck up little campers! If any of those are rational fears, then I prefer to be an irrational man.

Meh, crazies come out during every election. This isn't so different from the people in 04 saying they would move to Canada is Bush was re-elecated. Their rhetoric was just as empty.

I think what people need to realize is that we're screwed regardless of who wins. Both candidates are going to keep throwing money at the economic issues. Both will not withdraw from Iraq as quickly as most Americans want. Both will try to appoint partisan judges (Obama probably has a better chance of his nominations getting approved, given the Democratic majority). Both will probably engage the US in another conflict in the next 4 years. Both will not fulfill all of their campaign promises. The death of either would leave us with a much worse President. The list goes on and on.

Were you worried back in 2004 when you checked all the names with an "R" next to them?

I wasn't scared at all. In fact, I felt very, very good.

Then you have nothing to complain about.

OK, and now, looking back, do you think they did a good job? Do you think the dems can possibly do worse? Hell no.

And were you equally scared of a supermajority when the Republicans had it just recently? Is it safe to assume that you supported Democrats and/or Independent candidates for the House, Senate, or the Presidency, just to keep that scary scenario from becoming reality?

They are not rational fears which is why it is so confusing to you just as it is to me.

Socialism is to McCain like Terrorism is to Bush.

I'm afraid of repugs. I think I have good reason to be looking back at the last eight years.

Nevertheless, I'm more afraid of not doing anything about removing repugs from the political scene.

And we had to live through your bullshit for the last several years, I think you guys can man up and live with Obama and a Democratic congress.

No worries; it won't last long. The Dems don't have any brighter ideas than the GOPers; they're just in a better position to pass the blame along right now. Once the GOP is able to shake off the odor of Bush, it'll come back. The Dems aren't really as popular as they like to think they are - they failed to beat Bush twice (Dems really thought John Kerry was an electable national candidate?!?!), and their last period of control of both the White House and Congress lasted all of two years. Power corrupts all, and it'll corrupt the Dems enough for them to lose the public faith soon enough.

I will tell you why they are scared but you may be unwilling to believe it because of the implications it has for yourself and your own fear.

The right is terrified of Obama because they are hateful bigots. Bigotry is nothing more than the hate of self directed onto some target, a learned response as a result of being put down as a child and exposed to ridicule, the same ridiculed poured onto the other, the target of bigotry. All these bigots were made to feel like '*****' as children. And all the hate that was dumped on them they now project to be out there in the other, and they dump all that hate on him. And since what they fear he is is them, they are sure he is going to get even. When Obama gains power over them they fear it will be their turn to be the '*****' again. They are blind to the fact that it was always them in the first place who is the '*****'.

Man I can't wait until the D's outlaw Christmas and Christianity, start busing in illegals, make Spanish the official language, formally surrender to Al Qaeda, give Iran half of our nukes, invade Israel, institute 95% tax rates on anyone with a job, fund abortion vans which go door to door, outlaw all marriage except gay marriage, teach kindergartners how to have sex.

Man it's going to be an awesome next 4 years.

Edit Oh and I almost forgot

Scared? Hell yeah, I'm scared. :frown:

What exactly are you scared of? Just trying to gain some insight.

Several reasons:

1) More smaller business will either fail due to tax increases, or they'll have to curb the hiring of employees - and may even lay more of them off.

2) People who are not currently paying taxes, but will receive "Demfare" checks which will be disguised as tax credits. This will weaken the ability and desire for one to further advance themself.

3) The "real" Obama will appear. He's done a great job of keep calm, cool and collected; people love the view of him now, but what will the future bear?

4) Suppression of freedom of speech for networks who question any of his decisions or practices (as already witnessed via Joe Biden's) responses to date.

5) Joe Biden's "firecracker" temper.

1) Uhh, "smaller businesses" get a tax break under Obama. WTF have you been?

2) Didn't Bush and McCain send $700+ checks to damn never everyone in America this summer? "Demfare" indeed.

3) Completely and utter speculative FUD. Are you also worried that McCain's secret - and completely unfounded - anti-Jew streak will come to fruit?

4) ... what?

5) Man, with that temper of his, he could really cast an angry tie-breaking senate vote! Oh noes!

--------------------------

You're not too bright, are you? I could give you a better list of reasons not to elect Obama, and I'll probably vote for the guy!

1) Probable Democratic majority in house + Democratic President leads to things getting done a bit too quickly.

2) Has shown that by not accepting public finance, not filibustering, etc, he sometimes goes back on his word. Sure, they sometimes seems like good decisions, but if so, then stop making promises too quickly before you have all the facts!

3) Bigger government.

4) Pushed for the atrocious bailout package.

But all that said, I could give you a list 10x as long as to why McCain (at least the 2008 version of the guy) should not win, either.

You forgot a few things.

1) Legalization of marijuana and recreational drugs.

2) Give those already leeching off the Government via public assistance more Demfare.

3) Regulating the rules on Wall Street to the point that Ex-Lax won't get the system un-clogged.

You do know Kerry and Patrick will be appointed to Obama's staff if he is elected right?

Kerry was a better choice than Bush. Also, Kerry would have been kept in check by the Republican controlled House and Senate.

I don't trust Obama and believe half of what he has promised will be flip-flopped once he gets elected. I believe in a lot of his ideas but do not believe with the current economy that they should be implemented at this time. His economic plan also sucks. People here are so gun-ho for the change but don't realize the economics behind it or the repercussions that they will have on our country.
