How on earth can Romney be running such a god awful campaign?

I mean this guy was CEO of Bain Capital. You don't get to that kind of position without some form of mental competency, and yet his campaign has been run worse than even John McCain's was 4 years ago.

He's got no direction, flip flops every day, outright lies at every opportunity. It baffles me how someone as smart as he ought to be can run such a horrible campaign. I often feel that campaigns are the best indication of how a candidate will perform if elected. If Romney's is any indication this guy would be a complete train wreck.

The best political operatives know he has no chance and are thusly not wasting their time, energy and good reputation. He has second rate help and it is showing.

Let's see. The U.S. is getting it's credit downgraded again. We have a dead Ambassador caused by radical Muslims. Terrorist Muslims have attacked the U.S. command MFO base in the Sinai and are murdering people. The White House is cutting almost $55 billion in defense spending. We're getting huge numbers of terrorist threats in this country including those to nuclear facilities. Yet you seem to think that somehow the Romney campaign is screwing up? Nice try.

Romney is down in all major polls by at least 4-5 pts. Given the current economic state the country is in he should be up at least 4-5 pts. Looking at the swing state analysis shows an even grimmer picture. Obama is poised at this point to win reelection barring a major catastrophe.

Do you really think Romney's campaign is in good shape? What evidence do you have to support this?

So, you're somehow comparing a campaign for the Presidency to actual events in the world? Don't forget the insidious communist plot of fluoridation.

Monovillage, given your list of things shouldn't romney be up massively, instead of down 4-5pts.

Other than incompetence of campaign/candidate what can be the reason?

Some of the things I listed are so recent there's no way they would be reflected in the polls FFS.

When folk build an insane altered reality to live in and submerge themselves 10000 feet beneath the sea, cracks in the walls of armor are bound to form as well as a great deal of panic. Every crazy person who returns to a state of mental health has to experience a psychotic break where is ego is destroyed before it can reform in a healthy manner. To the insane the healer looks like Satin himself. That is why the ridicule of the right for the left is a complement.

Really, you're going to pick the one and only poll that shows Romney ahead, one with a well-established conservative lean?

I've said it before, but this campaign reminds me so much of the Kerry/Bush contest in 2004. Kerry seemed to have all the right conditions to make a run, but no got excited about him, he let the opposition define him, and never seemed to have a real cause. (Can you think of anything Kerry stood for, besides the "Democratic platform?" I can't, and he's from my state!) At the same time, there was no one else on the Democratic list that looked exciting. Howard Dean had some energy, but was considered too much of a risk to nominate (see Santorum, Richard J). Meanwhile, Bush had a diehard base that loved him, and managed to be likable and stable enough not to scare off the moderates.

Are you suggesting that the Romney campaign has anything to do with violence in the Middle East or terrorist threats against American soil? Because that's a fairly treasonous allegation. Then again, if you're not suggesting that, then absolutely nothing you've said has anything to do with Romney's campaign, which is the entire topic of this conversation. So either you're accusing Romney of funding terrorist activity both overseas and domestically, which is accusing Romney of treason, or you have absolutely no idea what is being discussed in here.

Why is Romney running such a godawful campaign? Because the ideas he touts to appeal to the GOP base are godawful to begin with. Had Romney run as the "Liberal GOP Governor from Massachusetts", he would never have gotten his party's nomination.

You'd have a point of "hardware Obamites" were the only ones still supporting Obama. Given the general polling trends, the problem seems to be more that Romney isn't changing ANYONE'S mind.

Yeah, but you've been complaining non-stop for 3+ years about this president. Surely he's so awful that only a complete and total failure of a candidate couldn't easily brush past him and right the nation... right?
