I doubt the wall is the solution either. Remember after Cesar Chavez negotiated for the wage hikes back in the 1960s most think tanks in this country had the US pegged to have a fully mechanized farming industry by 1975.

Yet here we are in 2015 still relying on subsistence wage workers for agriculture. It goes back to the open borders/welfare state debate. Government incentives have distorted the marketplace preventing real technological progress. Because of course they can't live on these wages, which means it falls back on the states and federal agencies, and ultimately the tax payer to subsidize the labor cost of these industries. The machines exist to do the work in most of these cases, but it simply makes no economic sense when you can pay less and let the government pick up the rest of the tab to support the families of illegal immigrants.

As far as Trump being a racist, building a wall isn't even an efficient way to keep out non-whites. Somewhere around 70% of non-white immigration into this country comes from the 1965 Immigration Act's family re-unification clause, which became the most expanded definition of family of any immigration policy in the world. Even if you removed every illegal immigrant from this country and their kids it wouldn't make a significant dent in the demographics of this country. If you wanted to preserve the demographics of the country the first thing you'd do is amend the 1965 Act. Certainly he would have to be a very stupid racist, or he's just stroking the un-educated peasant class for votes to suggest building a wall.
