how old were you when you first got a NEW car?

I still remember the day I picked it up from the lot... April 4, 1995... I was 17. I worked 7 days a week for quite a while during HS to be able to afford my portion of it. Still driving it to this day (see sig)... I will drive it until it won't drive me, but it's only up to 93k miles. 😀

In hindsight though, my kid's 1st car will be a USED one. Just a few things you do when you're inexperienced that should only be done to beater cars. 😉

23 first new truck. 24 first new motorcycle

But I would just like to give a nod to those used beater Hondas that got me through the broke a$$ student years.

The first new car I ever bought was when I was 22. It was a 1985 Mustang GT. I paid for it myself and I paid with cash I had saved. My next car (4 years later) was new also but it was the last new car I have bought and I don't plan on buying new ones in the future. A 2 year old low mileage used car is your best overall purchase from a financial standpoint....plus I really like old cars so fixing them up and driving them is more satisfying to me anyway.

18, paid for it myself. Wasn't expensive, around 8000 bucks (this was back in 1987, there were still some cheap base models that cheap that weren't Yugos/Hyundais). Next new car was when I was 25, next at 32, then the last new one I got was at 33. I'm 36 currently.

I WAS going to buy one right around now, but the gas prices scared me. Now, I'm thinking no new car until better looking hybrids come out.

I'm 30 and just bought my first new car, a 2005 Corolla S. Figured it was worth it to own this one, since the Toyotas generally hold their value pretty well. It'll likely have an even better resale value if gas prices keep going up, since it gets 30 MPG City / 38 MPG Hwy.

Uhm - WTF?!
edit: how much did you end up paying for that in depreciation?

Maybe not a lot, depending on the area. The Coopers are hot right now. If there aren't a lot of dealers close by, you can probably sell it for close to what a new one costs fairly easily.

never a brand new car, and I dont think ill ever buy a brand new car. too much loss of value in the first year.
i would rather buy a year old model which has not been used much or just been sitting with the dealer. its almost worthless buying a new car knowing ur losing 20% of its value

Yep, at my financial situation and looking at the numbers. I figured paying invoice + $300 on a brand new 2006 Corolla S with Leather/Sunroof/Side airbags/ABS was a lot better deal then paying MSRP for a Prius. Prius's battery is not going to last for a lifetime and I took that into my equation.

I don't find my choice to be a bad one compared to buying used.

Oh and batmanuel I like your sig, Donnie Darko FTW.

It wasn't too bad, not considering tax. I did trade it in though, so I did lose some. On the other hand, I'd never ever ever ever buy a new car other than these. I knew that these would stay hot for awhile and buying new wasn't going to hurt. Now we are looking at Jags and they ar edirt cheap after 2-3 years.
