How old were you when you bought your first home?

I just wondering what the average age of people are when they buy their first home. Were you married or single? Just curious because I'm 25 and wondering if I should be thinking about it by now...

Skoorb and are 25 and married. If we lived in Canada we would buy but because we are in the US and not sure for how long, we are stuck in an apartment at the monent. Blech.

I'm almost 28 (December 13, mark your calendars) and married ... probably won't be able to afford our first home until I'm at least 34.

I was 26 and married with two kids. I am now 32, still married with four kids and should be closing on our new house in the next couple of weeks.

I saw a statistic somewhere that the average age of first time buyers is 27 (Here in England at least).

I'm 22 and have recently moved to London because of work and am currently paying £650 (~$1000) per month for a 450 sq. ft 1 bed apartment.
I can't see that I'll be able to buy a house here for at least 3-4 years.

The area that I moved here from I could afford to buy a 4 bedroom house on my current wage.

Bought my first home at 25. Was dating my gf for about 5 months at the time of purchase. gf is now my fiance. We actually were looking together even though we were dating for 1 month when I started looking. It was actually fun to do. Going on Saturday drives lookingat stuff and eating out and going to movies. Ahhh, those werethe days. I was planning on getting the home before I even met her, so don't think I'm wierd.

If you plan on staying in the area more than 5 years, buy the house, otherwise rent.

IMHO: Yes you should be thinking about it now. Truth is, there's no age cut off. The sooner the better is the only rule. This will also be the time you realize how muuch of a waste of money a shiny new leased car is.

I'm 28 and we just purchased our 2nd home. Bought our first story and a half when I was 23. Nice little home, 1300 sq ft, single car garage, fenced in back yard, but it was on a slab and living in tornado alley that didnt fly with my wife. It was a great starter home though

We bought a 2400sqft home in may with large 2 car garage, huge fenced in backyard, big basement, large attic, etc.
We have 4 bedrooms (1 kid, another on the way), den in the basement, large kitchen, family room, living room, formal sitting room, partially hardwood floors, large laundry room in the finished basement also.

We have a small brook running in our backyard with a nice flower/rock garden as well.

The only thing is we need new siding and could use new carpeting also but that will come.

I'm more curious about who here owns a home in a major city, such as New York or Los Angeles, and at what age? Heck, my cousin just bought his first house last year (Was 29 yrs. old then, married, 2 kids), and he + wife make over $100k (before taxes), and they don't even live in that great a neighborhood. (My car got keyed in front of their house). I don' t think I'll ever be able to afford a house in NYC or Long Island.

I was 23 when my wife, she 20, and I bought our first house. Had 1 child. It was an 1100sf townhouse about 25 mins. outside of DC.
Lived there for two years. We now own a 2500sf townhouse, 2 kids and 35 mins. from DC.

I was 23, she was 20. We'd been dating for about 4 years at the time. We bought a nice 3 bedroom townhouse.

I'm was wondering that myself. Do people in big cities tend to purchase homes later in life? Two of my ~21 year old cousins are buying their own huge homes (4-5 bedroom, 1 arcre) in Apple Valley, CA (desert) for about half my apartment's rent a month.

I'm 26 and married and we just bought a house in June. We had to move to find affordable housing. We were both born and raised in the East Bay Area, but we had to move to Sacramento to even consider owning a house. I happened to really like Sacramento from when I went to college there, so it wasn't a big deal for me, but other people are reluctantly moving up here to be able to afford a house. I guess people have a bad impression of Sacramento because people call this 2 million population metropolis a "cow town", but I've never yet seen a cow in Sacramento County. Tons of them in the Bay Area and LA County, but whatever.

Anyway, the point is that you can afford a house, you just have to be willing to change some things in your life. Our mortgage payment is LESS than our rent in Concord was and we were paying low rent for Concord.

I was 26 and single when I bought my first house. Now in second house. The first house was technically in the D.C. metro area, but really only in name (was in the Frednecksburg area). My house here in the Pittsburgh suburbs cost $20k less for more living space plus a basement.
