Well I'm doing OK compared with you, considering I'm a 25yo accountant with a long term partner, with whom I just bought my first house. My brother is a recent graduate who immediately landed an excellent software engineering job, even in a bad employment market. You, on the other hand, are a teenager who is recovering from drug and alcohol addiction.

In NZ we have an expression too - stay the fuck away from compulsively lying drug addicts, because they have nothing positive to offer.

Here in LA area, unless you make pretty good money, you're going to need to have roommates to live with since it's still expensive to live anywhere. I definitely don't want to live with roommates again.

I voted never too old just because you can never know what will happen in life. However, if you do move in at the age of 30+ you better have a plan to get out in under 2 years.
 
Depends on the culture, but most Asian cultures have no problem staying at home for as long as you need to. There's no kicking out and I know in Filipino culture, the youngest child gets the house.
 
21-22 range when college is finished. I guess it is acceptable to live there a year or two after college while you build some savings to buy a house.

I moved out at 18 when I went to college. Lived in apartments through college and a few years after college. Bought a house at 26.
 
I left for college right at 18 and never went back. One of my friends is 27 now and still lives with his parents. He lived in an apartment during his 4 years at college, but other than that he's been at home. He is totally fine with it and actually has a decent enough paying job. I sort of envy his bill-lessness.

I think it depends on the financial situation and culture. Many Indians I know still live with their rich parents through their 30's to save the cash (smart IMO). If a kid is still living with their parents in their late 20's but going to school and paying rent I see no problem with this either. If they're sitting around playing video games and not working, then that's a problem.

1. Who's paying for the job search? That's not free.
2. Who's paying for shelter while you're not working? That's not free.
3. Who's paying for food while you're not working? That's not free.
4. Who's paying for transportation? That's not free.
5. Where's the mystical money coming from, to send you to college? That's not only not free, but increasing in cost at rates far above all other non-medical expenses.

Problem is, the minimum wage is under $10 for all states but the cost of living is not the same. It's not only in NYC that the cost of living is high. Oh yeah, $1400/month for NYC...*laugh*. Not even close.
