How often do you work out and for how long?

Dart, this is higly untrue. It's sooo untrue I can't even begin to respond properly to you about it. Why dont you continue to workout a muscle then wait it to heal before you workout the next muscle. By the time you get back to the muscle you first worked out it'll be like 10 days later. Do you really think workingout a muscle every 10 days is going to spawn maximum growth??? I'll continue to workout each muscle in my body as soon as its healed and workout two muscle groups a day and see the results you never will. Yes this response is snotty but watch what you say or how you say it cause what you've said is just bad info.

Another bad thing about your info is that someone else must be going around telling people this cause if you've tried workingout this way versus say the way I workout or a pro bodybuilder works out you wouldn't be going around spouting off this incredibly misinformed unexperienced information.

Tell you what...let's each establish a baseline, say bench/squat/run 2 miles. You follow your regimen, and I'll follow mine for three months and then recompare. I guarantee I'll have made way more progress than you.

And while we're at it, how bout you link some papers supporting your theories on exercise regimens.

None. Unless you count going up and down 5 floors of stairs about 3 times a day.

Any tips for a guy like me that needs to start getting in shape and lossing a few pounds.

I'm 5'8" and about 190lbs.

Well, weight loss is basically all about (calories in) - (calories out) so you either have to cut back your intake or increase your output. The latter is way easier to do IMO, and you get fitter as an added bonus. Try some different aerobic excercises, find some you like, and try to get an hour or so in at least 3-4 times per week. Just remember to start slow....the first few weeks of workouts should be at a level that feels too easy to avoid injury. The key is to keep it fun so you'll stick with it...mountain biking is my fave; I'm too busy having fun getting muddy to notice I'm getting in a good workout at the same time.

6 times a week for about an hour

If it's in the morning, it's calisthenics and a run
if it's in the evening, it's weights and cardio

I've been lifting weights for 8yrs and training others for about 4 now. I'm pretty hardcore into the whole scene and nobody with more than a couple years of experience who's serious about training will ever agree with you. I can't even think of where you might read something like you've stated for a workout from other than maybe something like 'Seniors' or 'over 50' magazine. It's just ridiculous.

fausto, if you followed what i said you would understand that if you worked out my way you wouldn't squat/bench/run 2 miles. My regimen would be to:

one day a week

  • bench heavy weights once you are absolutely worn out
    sprint for as long as you can(basically without passing out)
    work on your back muscles until you wear out, again heavy weights
    work out your quads using heavy weights until you wear out
    work out your abs preferably while holding a weight, until you wear out
    work on your triceps, heavy weights til wear out
    etc.. etc...

once your finished wearing out all of your muscle groups go cool down and relax, the day your muscles stop hurting wait another 3-4 days then repeat. you dont have to do all muscle groups every week, you can alternate work opposing groups on different weeks.

my point is this, unless you give your entire body enough time to heal itself you won't gain as much. Your entire body includes your entire body, spine, internal organs, etc. Unless you're using supplements (along the lines of creotine(sp?) or steroids(bad)) this is the healthier way to work out. imo of course.

2 days chest/shoulders
throw in legs whenver im not 2 tired.
everynite do some crunches/pushups/pullups
run/skifree wkends or when im not lazy.

and creAtine for your information doesn't really have a significant role in the recovery of muscle tissue. I would generally say it has no role at all in muscle tissue recovery.

I have not worked out in 3 years :eek: but recently I started to weight lift just before taking a shower. 20-39 minutes everyday Boy Do i feel the pain ;) but its all good.

How much do I WISH I worked out? 6 days a week. I usually get in 4, though. It's usually about an hour and a half.

I run 4 miles and then do free weights.

I second that. I get so sick of hearing students here complain that they never have time to work out! I make sure I have enough time to get my work done and leave that hour and a half specifically for the workout.
If you want it badly enough you CAN do it.

Dart: is ignorance really bliss? we're all pretty curious about this one....

You cannot make significant gains by working out once a week, no matter how hard you beat on yourself that day. Your body adapts to a stress only if the stress load is persistent. Otherwise, your body is just as happy to conserve energy and do nothing. One workout per week will not get your body's attention enough to cause adaptation, so stop talking out of your ass.

I repeat: if what you are proposing were effective, it would be the regimen of choice for pro athletes. Unless you can tell us why they don't follow the dart-plan, I think you should just shut up and stay out of the thread. Some here may actually be looking for useful info and your blather doesn't qualify.

Have you ever spoken to a coach or trainer?!?! That makes NO SENSE whatsoever. I have been in collegiate athletic programs as well as coached people myself, and I have NEVER, EVER heard such silliness.

Huh? So by using your program a person would only work out once every week or week and a half. There would be little or no gain performance or otherwise by working out that way. And if you want facts, search the freaking web.

Your are correct about giving the muscle group you lifted with a days rest, but only if you lifted hard the day before. Example: MON- 3x12 biceps $Xlbs or something, TUE- no biceps, WED- 3x12 or whatever... They do not need to rest for 7+ days. If you compete in something, in some cases people consider the competition to count for 2 training days and take the day after off. Some train through, however, as well. It depends on the sport and the importance of the competition.

yes they are odd. but whatever floats your boat, right? has anyone proven my idea wrong? not that i know of, but i could be wrong. has anyone ever proven my idea correct? kinda, just me and the guy who told me about it.

but hey, lets get back on topic.

M: Run 60min (elliptical machine, set for 6-8 resisitance, kept above 200 strides/minute - simulates running without joint stress).
T: Racquetball 2hr or Run 60min.
W: Run 60min again.
Th: Racquetball 2hr or Run 60min.
F: Ultimate Frisbee [similar in intensity to Soccer] - 2-3hr.

I'm mainly a cardio person, but I throw in weight training occasionally on M and W.
