how often do you turn off your laptops?

does anyone here just leave theirs on full time, like a desktop? i just got a T42, and am wondering how long i could safely keep it on.

Used to be always. But since I discovered the "Standby" function, I've been using it more and more. Saves heckuva lot of time waiting for Win2k to startup and the whole logon sequence to finish.

I don't turn it off, just close the lid and let it go to sleep when I'm not using it. It usually has uptimes in around 45 days or so when I have to restart it.

Leave it on from when I get home from class to when I leave in the morning. It's off and on when I haul it around campus all day...well, hibernate mode at least.

i set it to sleep too. conserves battery and fast load time. if i know it's going to be more than 24hrs, i set it to hibernate. only after installing something that requires a reboot do i actually turn it off.

I turned it off once or twice this year

I had an uptime of about 110 days on it until I decided to do some windows updates.

It runs Win2K.

I use it as my portable DVD player, winamp jukebox (connected to some speakers when I dont' want to use my headphones which are connected to my main rig), portable webcruising box, whenever I'm away from home for more than 24 hours box, and every now and again, Openoffice Calc Spreadsheets.

Not bad for the $300 I spent on it a year or so ago ....

I've leave mine on crunching most of the time. The only time it gets put to sleep or restarted is for updates or for transportation.

mine stays on 24/7, always downloading stuff. no issues with hdd or antyhing, although heat stays pretty high (60-70 degrees C) all the time cause of how hot it is here all the time. in the states it would stay in the 50's which is more normal for this laptop.

Be careful - leaving it on charging all the time will shorten battery life.

After killing my first battery, I use hibernate mode all the time, then charge it only when necessary.

I leave it on all week at work, only shut it down to take it home for the weekend, just in case some needs me to do something.
