Actually its the exact opposite depending on which components your concerned with. Certain components, such as your motherboard and your PSU will suffer if you leave your computer on all the time. However, its a proven fact that the hardest thing on you hard drive is it having to spin up and spin down all the time.
Think of it like your car, if your engine ran at a constant 4000 rpm all the time, the motor could go 500,000 miles without any problems. There are tons of tests, BTW, on this so if you dont believe me look it up. Its city driving, constantly haveing to rev up and rev down that tears apart your engine. Which is also why used car owners will specifically say "90% Highway miles" when their selling their vehicle with 100k on it - highway miles are much easier on the engine.
This analogy can be applied to HDD's in every aspect. If you leave your HDD's running all the time, they will last longer. Personally, its the most important component on the machine for me, which is part of the reason I leave my computer on 24/7.
