lostinohio, err, the reviews kind of point out that the fx5200 isn't too great. Their last generation Ti4200 can be had at about the same price and does tons better. Lower down, the ATi Radeon 9100 is an excellent value while still offering nice performance.

Yes, nVidia did a pretty poor job on the FX5200 --> FX5900. The 5800's were uber noisy, so the story goes. Those were in and out within just a little bit of time.

The FX 5200 was junk even before this scandal.

The 5200 is one of the worst cards money can buy. You would be MUCh better off with a Geforce 4, Radeon 8500, or even a geforce 3 ti500

The 5200 is an utter, worthelss, unredeemabel piece of crap and Nvidia should be punished for labeling it an FX card because it performce so horrible compared to their old cards. When people see 5200 on a shelf it is REASONABLE to expect it to be better than 4200

Thats just another reason you CANNOT buy uninformed in this industry

actually, ati's acquisition of artx (gamecube provider) is what made the radeon possible. the 5800\5900 werent really rushed. nvidia lost a lot of time developing for xbox without thought of competition. this is sort of what happend to 3dfx. though 3dfx never really got into the OEM business that made ati what it is today.

I predicted nVidia's downfall TWO (2) years ago (after the Rad 8500) :Q

look at my archived threads :p

The REAL reasons: 1) Arrogance

2) Marketing (instead of engineering) driven.

that's all folks

no, its not. 3dfx started making boards and nvidia started making sucky chips

No, 3dfx never lied about anything, never used any trick drivers or anything like that, and Nvidia is not going to see a sudden death, the company is large, and makes a lot of money from the Nforce 2 and 3 chipsets, which AMD is currently rather dependant on.

Most probably they will come to the conclusion of not showing they were wrong (trying to keep the integrity of the FX line), but instead releasing a really really fast card to cover up the past problems.
But that's what the nv31 was supposed to be for the nv30.

truee, but 3dfx instead just told the buyers that you dont need more than 16bit colors, you dont need big textures and so on, and then they had Bubba, cool guy but not realy a PR person, but Bubba was one of the guys who made the industry interesting, has been soooo dull ever since, I miss him :)

nvidia will live for a long time, they have done remarkebly well in the motherboard market and they will get back on their feet in the graphics market, if it will be the nv40 or whatever comes after that remains to be seen

ATi dealt better with the competition, for a long time there top card was the 8500 which was being killed by the geforce4 ti series. they patiently waited and waited as the 9700 Pro was being designed. then they dropped the revolutionary 9700 pro and nvidia was not able to deal with the competition, esp since the 5800 ultra fiasco

I hear the design docs for Longhorn were written in babies' blood!

Yeah, lets all start blaming microsoft shall we?

Ummm, no thanks, I think the responsibility lies with the nVidia Marketing Department telling lies and trying to restrict the truth about card & driver performance.

damn, why is everyone so fanatical about bashing nvidia. they screwed up. i won't be buying their cards any time soon. but people throw fit when anyone suggests nvidia shouldn't be bashed 100% of the time.

A pixel shader 2.0 written according to the recommendations from ATi or created with the current DX9-SDK HLSL compiler unfortunately highlights all those problems. Such shaders use many temp register and have texture instructions packed in a block. A shader of version 1.4 uses the same principles.

nVidia will have to tackle these problems, the earlier the better. Microsoft is working on an SDK update which will include a new version of the compiler that can produce more "NV30-friendly" code with less temp registers and paired texture ops. But if developers use PS 1.4 or generate only one PS 2.0 shader, this compiler won't help nVidia much. They will have to solve the problem in the driver.

Its funnie how everyone knows whats going on behind the scenes! We dont know whos fault it is really. For all anyone knows, Nvidia could of had an early peek at what dx9 was while working with MSFT on the xbox then jumped the gun and made a new core while MSFT changed the spec. on Nvidia!

OR, they got behind on there graphics when venturing in Motherboards and the X boxes, and made a bad choice of just making better driver tweaks instead of making better cores!

Who knows whats happening over there, it could just be that someone has their head up their a$$!! Dont get so pissed to where it actually causes bad and unnessassary publicity! Remember, COMPETITION IS GOOD!!!

if Nvidia goes down, its gonna suck for us!

yeah, i don't know. i never said i did know. that's the point of this thread. to throw out an idea and see if anyone knows more.

and i find it odd when:

A pixel shader 2.0 written according to the recommendations from ATi or created with the current DX9-SDK HLSL compiler unfortunately highlights all those problems.

problems, referring to problems in fx architecture/drivers.

i didn't say my ideas with authority, i said it with suspicion. but people can't help and feel like it's some underhanded defense for nvidia which threatens there nvidia-bashing-fun. and it's not some underhanded way of thwarting the problem and shifting the blame on evil-monopoly-microsoft. i stated reasons, which would make sense to me if true, of why msft has reason to be less than pleased with nvidia: xbox and longhorn.

like i said, i won't be buying nvidia cards anytime soon, but some of you guys need to open your minds. don't dismiss an idea, refute it. i've tried giving some support to my idea and am asking for either more support or reasons for refutation, not fanboy-ism.

I believe the main reason for nVidia' predicament is that the 9700 Pro genuinely caught them off guard. ATi must've kept such a tight lid on it that nVidia really had no idea just how powerful it was.

I mean look, even a year later it's still hammering nVidia's newly released flagship product and this is nVidia's second attempt at beating it.

Gee, how history repeats itself..

3DFX (Voodoo5 - Delays = Death) -> nVidia (FX Series - Delays = Death) -> ATi (Wait a few years)

I remember how you guys BASH 3DFX like crazy whe nVidia first came out with something decent and now ATi is at the top of the list.. in 2 years, you guys go back to the same spot and bash ATi when someone else comes out with something better..

There is no satisfying you people. You guys just replaced the equation of 3dfx and nvidia with nvidia and ati, now find someone to replace ati

Because of...

A) ATI's amazing jump out of nowhere-land which turned them into a major force in the GPU market.
B) nVidia's cheating problems to try and get a lead (or level) with ATI.
C) nVidia's cheating discovered which put ATI in higher-grounds and put nVidia even lower.
D) People love ATI now, such as me. :)

your memory is short . . . ATI used to be on top

And it's good to have a GPU mfg to DISscuss - it gets pretty BORING in GH.

I have been an ATi fan ever since I knew what a video card was... even if they die... I will be an ati fan for life ;-)
