How much would you pay for this television?

With a discount, it will cost me $3500. I think that's reasonable for a birthday/Christmas present (combined).

Yes, and it doesn't include silly speakers on the side(Which i'm assuming you won't use since you should have a 5.1 sound system).

Make sure you do lots of research on this particular model - and be aware that prices have been dropping like a rock and will continue to do so over the next few months. Panasonic just dropped the prices on their new line pretty dramatically.

I have heard that www.visualapex.com is a pretty reputable (and cheap) online retailer for plasmas, so you should dig around there for price comparisons to similar models...

Personally I'm sure the elite 43 is beautiful, but I don't know that it's worth the $$ when for that sort of money you should be able to pick up a nice 50" HD set. I had convinced myself to buy a 42, but once the 50s started hitting the $2000-$3000 range, they looked awfully good.

that looks good

Without seeing the two TVs side by side, the *assumption* would be that pioneer elite would be a better set than this panasonic. HOWEVER, this will also depend on your husband - is he the kind of guy who wants the absolute best of the best, or will he be so happy to have a plasma that "very good" is good enough?

As a reformed gadgetholic, I would rather have a "very good 50 inch" plasma over a "supurb 43inch" plasma. But that is just me.

The panasonics do have excellent reviews online - but that can be very deciving.

A good chunk of the Pioneers price is the pioneer name mark up and the extra stuff like tv tuners, speakers etc, which the Panasonic does not come with since it's a display for a home theater instead of a "TV".

This is Panasonic's brand new 8th gen glass and according to the people at AVSforums it's pretty good stuff.

Flot, my husband would be happy to have a "very good" plasma; he doesn't need the absolute best, he just watches so many sports I'd like him to have something better than the old fat 27" television we have now to watch them on.

The dark room comment was to see if he might be happy with a projector in case you didn't get what I was saying.

for $3500 you could get the 42" HD panasonic (42PX50U) AND the 42" ED panasonic (42PD50U) for the bedroom. 🙂

you'll have more luck w/ reviews/insight at www.avsforum.com. they seem to like the panasonics, though.

Can you get discounts on any other brands or models?
Have you looked at DLP or LCD sets?

That set is not a HDTV set, as it only has a 1024 x 768 native resolution. The PRO-1120HDhas a true HD native resolution of 1280 x 768 pixels. It's quite a bit more money though.

I really think you'd be happier with either a DLP or LCD set.
Here's one DLP model.
