With a discount, it will cost me $3500. I think that's reasonable for a birthday/Christmas present (combined).

$3500 is a steal for a Pioneer Elite Plasma. They are among the best brands of plasma you can buy.

When I move into my new place, this will be the plasma I buy.
You're a great wife, by the way.

the elite models offer the best picture quality of any plasma out there, so you get what you pay for. but i wouldnt pay over 8 for one

What's your viewing distance, how bright will the room be most of the time, and what's your budget?

The Samsung 46" - 56" DLP tvs on this page are another good choice, the cheaper ones are "720p" HDTV instead of "1080p" but on a 46" set that should be fine.

Most AV reviewers say DLP picture is superior to Plasma and LCD, and there is no screen burn-in risk like Plasma has. The DLP sets are also fairly light, under 75 pounds for 46-50", and while not as thin as plasma they are only 18" deep.

Answer Apex's questions and listen to his advise. God knows how many plasma screens he has.
