How much thermal compound do I apply on Tbird 1.2?

I have a FOP32-1 on a Tbird 1.2. Do I just put the thermal compound on the core surface (small rectagular shinny, in the middle), or on the entire chip surface? My Tbird is already unlocked and I'm going to bring it to 1.4G. Right now, it's running 9.5 x 133/33, and the temp is ~40C normal, ~46C after 2 hours of Age of Empires:TC in win98SE. Thanks.

Here is the rest of the system (just put together yesterday), I am really exctited, so let me brag a little bit okay :)

KT7A-R
40G Maxtor
Elsa Geforce2 GTS 32M
SB Platinum 5.1 with DDT 2500
512M Infineon PC133
8X plextor
and...a $3 modem

put it allover the top. also put mayo between all your pci slots and the cards that are going in, that helps give a better connect. some people also put mayo between the socket and cpu but i find this to be excessive. once you do that tho everything will be smoking!

good luck mang

You only place thermal compound on the core itself. That little rectangle thing you were talking about. DO NOT place it all over the chip, just the core. Don't forget to remove the thermal pad(if any) on the hsf. GL on your overclock.

ok i was just kidding, dont use the mayo, just put some thermal grease on the chip (the small part in the middle) and just use a thin coat evenly spread over the entire top, you should be good to go there; )

You only need thermal compound on the core surface. The thinner the layer of thermal compound the better.

as thin a layer as needed for filling the gap between cpu and heatsink. Obviously depends a lot on heatsink quality and surface.

Great, hehe that's what I thought. Cool, now I don't have to take off the HSF and reinstall it. It's a pain in the A$$ to push that clip into the socket. Is my temperature okay? I think it's average (leaning toward the high side). Anything I can do to cool it down a bit.

By the way, I've been in the forums a while, just reading. Lots of helpful and friendly people are here. You guys are great. Keep it up. Thanks everyone!

46C would be okay under load. But does Age of Empires 2 really put alot of pressure on the cpu? That I am not sure. I like to run Prime95 and Quake 3 for a few hours to get that thing hot.
