How much should I spend on a mattress?

Not entirely sure which size I'm going to get yet...leaning towards full, but maybe a queen. How much should I plan to spend? I've seen some under $400, and some over $3000... :Q

I'm not looking for ultra-high-end luxury, but I don't want something cheap either...is there a certain price point that gives you the best value/money?

Just took delivery of a King size Sealy last Wednesday.

$1350 delivered. The store ranged from about $600 to $2000 for the Sealy models we liked.

Awesome bed. Very happy.

~$1,000 if you want something very comfortable.

$3-500 if you want a surface to sleep on.

when I bought my mattress back in September, I found a $1.3K mattress that I fell in love with... sales lady marked it down to $800 for me, gave me free same-day delivery, and 12 months no-interest.

she tried to get me to try one of the $3K mattress sleep systems, but I was too afraid I'd succumb :p I think I'm happier not knowing what I'm missing.

Make sure you try the mattress. Basically it's about whether you like firm, very firm, soft, etc etc. Very hard to compare mattresses since same manufacturer sells basically the same mattress under different names so you can't comparison shop for price. If you go to Sam's or Costco, pull that sucker down (go on a weekday) onto the floor and lay on it--they won't hassle you, just make sure you are not blocking an isle.

You don't have to spend a lot to get a very good mattress (~$300-400), but the most important thing is the firmness, which is hard to judge when they put "pillow tops" and the like on them. But you will know a month or three after you buy it if you like it, but by then you are stuck with it.

Probably not but it depends on how cheap of a mattress you're looking for.

A few years ago during CostCo's annual mattress sale (January) we bought a Sealy Posturpedic Queen which was on sale for $399 - $60 coupon = $339 out the door.

Our next mattress will probably be purchased from CostCo, unless we switch to memory foam/latex.

Well, my dad owns a mattress company, can get you a "tempurpedic" memory foam, queen size for probably around 900 shipped im sure to where ever you live. Same thing, but about 1/3 of the price. Oh yeah, and that's a set including a box spring foundation. We have anything you'd want, latex, different combinations of soft/firm memory foam material, whatever you want:) PM me if you are interested.

I spent around $1k on a queen size Sealy Posturepedic Crown Jewel. One of the best purchases I've ever made.

My advice is to get one that you can flip! I have a "non flip" mattresses, and it already has a 2 inch dent in the middle two months later :(

Try the mattress first. Then you want to look at what the warranty is. You can find good deals on mattresses so you don't have to spend $1000 or more on a good one. Just make certain it is a quality brand and has a good warranty. If the mattress has a 20-25 year warranty, then most likely it is a good mattress and will be a good deal.

I went to a local mattress shop. Their cheapest was $80. It felt like sleeping on a box full of springs with a slip of fabric over top. Lousy. Next highest was $189. Better, but not excellent. The next highest was quite nice - soft springs, and a thick cushiony layer on top. $280 - out of my price range. I was furnishing a new apartment, so my budget was kind of low already; $189 was already more than I'd wanted to spend.

I got the $189 mattress. A local Kmart was having some clearance blowout sale - I got a $50 comforter for $10. I put that over top of the mattress for extra cusioning. Not too bad.

Just go to a mattress store and try some of them out. Check the Yellowpages for a retailer. Those things that are over $1000, for that price, they'd better dress me, brush my teeth, and drive me to work. If you get to $3000, it had better flawlessly recreate sleeping in zero-gravity or else it's not worth it.

Mattresses are one of the few things where you never want to skimp. Mattresses and toilet paper.

Im sorry, knowing the mattress business my whole life, the "flip mattess" is the biggest scam in the industry. Smart by manufacturer standpoint, to munipulate the consumer to think that they should have to flip the mattress to keep it in good condition. This allows them to cut more corners than you'd like to believe, and maximize crazy profits. Never had to flip one of the mattresses from my dad's company, and you really shouldnt ever have to if they are made up to quality.

Good point - spend at the higher end of your price range, but do still try them out so that you're not overspending. If you can't tell the difference between $600 and $1000, no sense spending the extra money, unless maybe it's a 2 year warranty vs 30 years.

I ended up spending close to $1.1k, but it's by far the most comfortable mattress I've ever slept on. No regrets here.

I spent $99 on my mattress/box spring 5 years ago.

edit: i should mention that it was a pillow top and very comfortable. I have never heard complaints from any of my dates/ex-girlfriends.

Well I sleep on like a $5 mattress right now, and I sleep like a rock. So no, getting a "nice" one doesn't mean crap to me.

Good point.

My gf and I just bought a semi high end memory foam mattress (about 1.6k :( but it was the only one we could agree on) a month ago but so far I'm just amazed at it. A night's sleep is like an 8 hour coma. It's got a 20 year warranty too.

It's interesting to note the relation between cheap matresses and the irritableness of the poster.

Curious as to the brand and size.
