Good point - spend at the higher end of your price range, but do still try them out so that you're not overspending. If you can't tell the difference between $600 and $1000, no sense spending the extra money, unless maybe it's a 2 year warranty vs 30 years.

Good point.

My gf and I just bought a semi high end memory foam mattress (about 1.6k :( but it was the only one we could agree on) a month ago but so far I'm just amazed at it. A night's sleep is like an 8 hour coma. It's got a 20 year warranty too.

Curious as to the brand and size.
Serta Queen. Really similar to the tempur pedics but a little cheaper. I should add we both liked the higher end tempur pedic's, but jeebus they rape you on price. Probably would've liked to have gotten a king, but she'd still manage to slide over and confine me to a 2 foot wide strip on my side. Plus our bedroom can't really handle a king, or so I tell myself.

It really depends on what you are looking for...

I just spent a little over 2k on a queen one. Select Comfort FTW.

But thats just me. You could sleep just as well on a $300 one.

We get the same materials from the same company that tempurpedic gets theirs from. Lets say, they gotta pay for that advertising somehow, and that's by jacking up prices. I think a queen tempur, similar to their highest end ones, is maybe at most 1300 for a set, and i think that's high, but not sure since material prices have been crazy as a result of inflation from the gas prices.

I was NOT impressed with costco's offerings on mattresses. They just didn't have the comfort of others in the 2500 dollar range.

IMHO you start at 2000 for a quality mattress that will last more than a few years.

It isn't high end but it offered the most bang for our buck.

Cheap memory foam mattresses @ Foambymail.com. I built the foundation out of wood and MDF, used a $50 frame from Sam's, and bought a $50 velour cover from ebay. Total cost? Around $650 for an 8" king memory foam bed. :D Is it as good as the $3500 Dormia I tried in the store? No. But the fact that I saved around $2800 helps me sleep better. :)

Unfortunately their sale is limited to plus or extra plush. If you want firm - there's no point in waiting for a sale, since it's not going to be discounted. You could buy it any time. But then, you are better off with Macy's sale.

We bought ours during Macy's sale. It cost us $900 after all discounts, free delivery, old mattress takeaway, free springbox, yada-yada, and the best part - no insane sales pressure like you see at Sleep Train or god forbid, Mattress Discounters.

You got a good deal without the hassle of trying to secure a mattress against the canopy of a Ford Ranger during slight mist of rain.

LOL! SO true...

I've always said that the 2 things you never want to skimp on are your mattress and your work shoes/boots...you spend too much time in one, and not enough in the other. I'll have to remember the TP however...

OP, a big part of the quality of mattress will be how big you are (and your sleeping partner if you have a regular)
Us bigger(fatter) people need more support to hold up our fat asses...skinny folks can sleep in a box of kleenex and get decent support...;)

I've seen several mattress/bed sets that I'd LOVE to have, but the budget just won't stand $4K to $5K for a mattress...$2K is about the max for my finances...

BUT, a good mattress will sleep better, last longer, and your back will appreciate it.

^^^

between $500-$1000

any more than that is wasted

Well I'll be the odd man out then. I've had cheap mattresses, they work decent and then after a few years they are done.

I've had a few middle of the road matresses, they're comfy, but their done after a few years.

I've been hunting for a quality mattress that doesn't break the bank for 6 months now and they just don't exist. My queen cost 1400 15 years ago and today it is still going strong, although now a guest matress. It is still super comfy. Meanwhile my 900 buck king that is 5 years old is totally done and worthless.

Don't skimp on a mattress and don't skimp on furniture. You 'generally' get what you pay for in both of these high markup products, although inflated.

You spend 1/3 or more of your life on it...buy as much and as good a quality as you can afford.

Personally I don't think it matters if a $400 mattress doesn't last as long as a $2k mattress, it doesn't need to. Add in a $120 4" memory foam topper from Overstock, and it will be just as comfortable.
