in chinese superstition (and that's really all I believe it to be), red = luck. There are so many superstitions that people follow religiously (pardon the pun) - you don't even want to hear half of them...

A Chinese friend of mine would always look forward to Chinese New Year. Up here in Canada the $50 bill is red and thus a popular amount to give.
