Well, traditionally Chinese don't celebrate birthdays either and obviously there's no Christmas so New Year's is the only time for "gifts" IIRC.

I haven't looked at mine yet.

At any rate, its not really elders per se. The way its suppose to be is that married people give them to the kids and what not in their family. As most of us here are unmarried we still get some even in our early 20's (well, i am anyway).

And Red Envelope is not a direct translation:roll:

I am not Chinese.

I didnt even get one red envelope. Btw: I only know what the hell this is because of last year! (see ATOT does teach people things!)
 
dang, for those who got em how old are you guys ... I'm 26 and I'm seeing less and less, granted most of my relatives are 6hrs away ...

IIRC Chinese people have one day per year where we celebrate a sort of "universal" birthday. Its kinda wierd.
