A year ago I built a new system for myself for gaming and stuff. As you can see in my sig, I purchased 2*256MB of some good memory. Recently, I visited my nephew who's pc was also built by me. He has one stick of 512MB @ 333fsb so I stuck in another 512 for a birthday gift (with Doom3). Playing UT2004 on his machine I discovered that once he quits UT2004 his pc goes right to the desktop whereas mine takes over 30 seconds to get the desktop back to normal.

I would rather have more memory with loose timings than less memory with tighter timings. I have to wonder about the value of such exotic RAM.

I currently have 1GB, but I'm going DOWN to 768MB because I want higher speed RAM.
I'm currently running an XP2500+-M at 17x133 (2266MHz), I should have an extra 512MB coming later today, to go with 256MB I already have, so it'll offer me hopefully 200x11.5 instead.
I can always swap back to 1GB if the extra FSB gives less boost than the extra 256MB RAM.

I've got 1gig in the one PC and 512MB in the other. I am about to go to 1.5gig in one, and 1gig of pc4000 in the other(to run the ram at 1:1 with my 2.8E prescott @3.5ghz)

I plan on having 2GB for my next system. I'm a hardcore Photoshoper, and also work as a web designer. I usually multitask between Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Flash, several IEs, Firefox, Outlook and so on. I can't do that "that" easily with my current 512MB, so my next box will have at least 2GB.

Wow, that's a lot of things running at the same time. Do you plan on getting several 512MB sticks or a couple of 1GB sticks?

my big problem with ram is that right now I can buy 2 512 MB sticks of ram, and add 1 GB of ram to my main rig, but the problem is that then I have 0 free slots and I'm using 1.25 GB of memory when I could have 3 GB of memory. So either save some money right now and get 2 sticks or later on having not to use 2 sticks because I'm replacing each stick for a 1 GB stick of ram. So I wish :) ;)

Once ram got expensive again, I stopped buying more... I've added a couple of machines and there's not enough to go around anymore!

wow, you guys must have a lot of money, most of the votes are for 1GB.

I originally budgeted 512 RAM for my rig, but a month later I got a sweet tax return. $100 of it went to another 512 of RAM and the rest went to the bank. :)

1GB. According to my task manager, I don't need any more. When the task manager tells me to get more, then I will.

Yeah, it is. I have Outlook in the background to manage my tasks, Photoshop and Illustrator for graphic touchups, Dreamweaver for coding and several browers (IE, Firefox and Opera) to test the results... sometimes, I have a few other utilities running too. I guess I would get two 1GB sticks, but I've seen that 4 512MB sticks are cheaper.

I got myself 2 gigs of unbuffered non ecc pc400 memory and doom3 is like lightning, but for the average gamer, 1 gig is plenty.
