How much protein should i consume a day?

My aunt said to much protein damage my kidneys shes a health nut.. i did know this but i dont know how much is to much. I work out about 2 hours every other day now. Lifting weights only very little cardio. Im 6'3 and steady at 200-205 pounds (depending how much i pig out) not sure how much protein i consume a day but i eat tons of fish eggs milk and chicken so im guessing umm 150 grams a day? been eating chunky peanut butter at night with some milk for my night protein. thinking about buying a 10 pound bag of gold whey for nighttime to cut down some the fat from the peanut butter.. 66$ for a 10 pound bag doesnt seem to bad for the optimum gold whey on amazon.. So how much do you think i should consume a day / per meal / times a day.. SORRY FOR MY LACK OF GRAMMAR SPELLING ETC I KNOW IM DUM!!!!!!!!!! HAHA
 
I'm wondering the same thing. From what I've seen on different sites, the kidney damage is minimal, and some sites even say minor liver damage can occur at high levels of protein. But a lot of bodybuilding sites also say that if you are using a lot of the protein (building muscle) it doesn't matter. I've also seen sites relating too much protein (more than half your weight, converted to grams) causing brain confusion.

There is so much info out there on both sides I can't get a straight answer either way.
 
Without actually ever tracking your protein consumption it really doesn't help you much to know how much protein you should be taking in each day. So, create a free account on fitday.com or some other tracking website and record for a week and remove the guesswork.

Generally, .75 to 1g of protein per pound of body weight. Some heavy lifters will go higher. It's best to eat 5-6 meals per day and spread out that protein intake evenly across the day which it sounds like you may be doing already.

To quickly determine your daily protein in grams, divide your weight in pounds by 2. Too much daily protein may cause hepatic encephalopathy (mental confusion). This occurs when the amount of dietary protein is greater than the liver's ability to use the protein. This causes a build up of toxins that can interfere with brain function.
 
Unless you have a serious kidney condition, your protein consumption WILL NOT damage your kidneys. That is specific to people with kidney damage.

For real.. A 6 pack of Mountain Dew prob does more dmg them 100g of protein every day. I am not a Doctor, but I never had kidney infections from daily protein shakes, but a 24 pack of Dew drunk over the course of a week will give me one.
 
Seriously though, how often has anyone even heard of kidney failure related deaths due to excessive protein intake. Shit, I've heard more stories of people dying from water overdose... maybe people should stop drinking water now. 🙄
 
I'm getting the overall impression from a lot of health and body building forums that it isn't a big deal to take in a large amount of protein.

I'm not sure why there is still that minority out there that believe that it poisons your body (try a google search on the subject, it's amusing) but I think I'm going to double up my intake. I'm only taking in about 60g now at 200lbs, I want to up that to at least 100g. I just need to buy some whey that has low cholesterol/protein ratio.

If you're trying to gain or lose weight, you should be taking in closer to 200g/day.
 
Depends on your goals.

Bulking = 1.5g per pound of bodyweight (this is pretty hardcore)
Normal lifting = realistically between .75g and 1g per pounds of bodyweight
Cutting (but still lifting) = same as "normal" imo

And yes there are cases where people get kidney or liver problems with too much protein but the only real stories of heard of this are like old time sailors trapped on an seal island where all they ate was seal meat protein and fat.

Make sure you drink enough water (at least 1Gallon a day). The best way to check MINIMUM amount of water is to take 1/2 your body weight and have that many ounces of water. If lifting heavy and eating a lot of protein though, I'd go minimum 128 oz.

An yes, Optimum Nutrition Whey is a good standard. You can also check out NutraPlanet whey or places like "AlltheWhey". You might find better deals there and both of those are well respected in the lifting community......in other words, you know you aren't getting a much of crap protein.

You've got something wrong with you if mountain dew is giving you kidney infections, and the stuff that says high protein will cause kidney damage doesn't say it does so by giving you an infection either.

I've read the abstracts of some studies that suggested it a while ago, but they didn't seem conclusive and I'm not a body builder so I don't really have to worry about it.

In my experience, health nuts are the last people you should trust about health. They tend to be very quick to dismiss legitimate information and pickup questionable information depending on what they "feel" must be true. This is of course a stereotype though : p
