How much noise should I put up with in my apartment?

Further to this thread where my neighbours had a psycho party that was obviously unacceptable, I don't know what level of music I should just deal with. My neighbours are playing their music on their loud stereo 16 hours a day now. To give you an idea of the volume, it's loud enough in certain songs I can just make out the lyrics, but usually I can just hear the continuous rumble for 16 hours a day of their subwoofer. They usually quit around midnight, apartment quiet hour is 11PM. If they didn't have that fucking subwoofer it wouldn't even bother me, but the noise just comes right through the floor into my apartment.

Because of my complaint and their wild party, my land lord served them a warning today. If they aren't quiet, they'll be evicted. Well, guess what, tonight they're even louder than their standard level of music. They obviously aren't too worried about getting evicted.

I'm a shift worker so this daytime continuous level of music destroys my sleep. I know as a shift worker there's less consideration given to me, but it boils down to either them getting evicted or me finding a new place to live. I can't sleep here anymore. I don't take any pleasure in getting someone evicted and I really don't want to lead to that...but it's them or me it seems.

I left a note a couple months ago about their music and it's loudness to which they were quiet for awhile, but now they're loud again all the time. I'm out of options. I've also discovered they are insane and assaulted my neighbour, so I'm not exactly wanting to go over there and make nice.

Just call the police and with the warning from the landlord they will do more then simply have them turn the music down.

Get a shotgun, kick down their door, and shoot all their A/V equipment.

Edit - I just looked at your sig and performed a face palm.

Egg crates do nothing. For sound deadening, you need mass and no entry points for the sound.

OP: you can try getting ear plugs from your local drug store. But, I would not put up with any noise after 10pm. After 1130pm cops are called regardless what day of the week it is.

Why do you have to even post this thread and ask? Call the police and the landlord now.

I don't know. Because they'll do stuff like now where they just suddenly turned their music down so I can barely hear the murmur of it. I then feel guilty because I know they have a conscious in there, lol.

Find out where the power disconnect is.

If unmarked just go through them one by one. When the music stops make a note of it.

When they become disruptive shut off the power.

All you people who complain about apartment living should use these experiences to drive yourself to make more money so you can buy a damn house. I absolutely hate apartments. I am so glad I have never lived in one.

I make plenty. See my other thread :p

1) I'm out of town at least 1/3 of every month. This means if I bought a detatched house I'd have to get a neighbour or coworker to house sit pretty much constantly. Not feasible.
2) I could get an apartment condo, but would that solve my problems? I don't know.

Did you actually speak with someone or did you just leave a note?

I left a note. After them or their friends assaulted my neighbour the other day, I'm not inclined to speak to them.

Do you go directly to calling the police or do you attempt to speak with the person first?

I think it's terrible that such a large percentage of people are so anti-social that they can't bring themselves to speak with their neighbors and say, "Hey, you guys are being ridiculously loud and I have to work in X hours. Can you keep it down for me? At least turn the sub woofer off since it's the vibration that makes it harder to sleep." Police have more important stuff to worry about than your noisy neighbor that you are too anti-social to confront in a civil matter.

Had this problem for about a week at my new place, some chick singing Mexican revolutionary songs a couple of apartments over on the next floor up at 6am. Dont get me wrong, she was good but I really have to have a couple beers in me before I can really get into that and 6am is early. Then 2 days ago they moved out. :)

You still have to deal with idiotic or asshole neighbors if you live in a house. About the only way to ensure "peace" is to make sure you live in a house where your nearest neighbor is at least a mile away.

As for not bugging the police - yeah, I guess we don't want to take them away from their coffee break at the local Starbucks or Donut shop. ;) It's THEIR job to keep the peace - not yours. :)

You know how it takes 30+ minutes for the police to arrive when you call them for something like this, but only 3-5 minutes when its an emergency. Its because the police aren't fucking morons and understand the concept of priority.

settle down, mind the ;) !!!

most apartment complexes actually have police that live on site and get a discount for living there for willing to be "on call" if necessary. I know ours currently has 2 police officers that live here that will show up in plain clothes to try and resolve any disputes before having to call in uniformed backup. i'm sure 90% of them are noise complaints. You should check with your office, we had a special extension to call for on-campus security

My apt building quiet as can be. Even with all the college students here, there is very little noise. I live in a 3 story walk-up.

Ontario law says you have the right to enjoyment of the premises. This means you are not to be subjected to excessive noise or harassment.

Call the Police and file complaints with the Landlord and hopefully evict those bastards.
