i have a Mc IIci sitting here waiting to be put to death by me, but i'm wondering if it is worth anything. date on the motherboard is 1989, i'm not sure what the specs are because the hdd is locked, so i can't get it to boot into the OS. if i do happen to put it on fleabay it'll be sold without the hard drive, as it may have personal files and such on it. the whole things works as far as it will boot up, and it has an 'accelerated 8-bit' graphics card, with functional moniter, keyboard and mouse. i'm not looking for buyers or anything, just curious to see if this is worth anything or if i should strip it for any useable parts. everything is yellowed from age, but thats what you get with a 12 year old machine ;) again, i'm not looking for buyers so don't bother to PM me, just wondering if anyone has any advice about what to do with it before i destroy it :)

edit: it has a Cache card as well, quantam ProDrive LPS 50 pin(?) scsi drive and 8 30 pin SIMMS of various sizes, i have yet to check the markings for the sizes

edit2: just pulled two of the ram sticks, one has two chips with markings
HY514400J-80
9217A Korea

and the larger one with 8 chips:
OKI Japan
M5141008-70SJ
42755019A9Z

any idea what size these may be? thanks :)

Woah, put that baby in a museum! ;)

As for whether or not anything can be salvaged, that's doubtful, though I can't say for sure.

it also has a 1991 Apple NIC in it, odd looking connector
floppy drive needs to be cleaned, but everything works and is in surprisingly good condition(except the discolouring on the outside)

time to crack open the hdd and see what those old scsi drives looked like inside :)

Considering my Mac Performa 630CD (comparable to a 486 DX/33) is only worth $100 with 14" monitor I'd say $20 or maybe less. I'd either destroy it and video tape it, donote it to a charity/school (get a tax write off) or just give it to someone.

Hmm.... 70ns Hyundai memory in a machine built in 1989!?!?!? THAT'S advanced (considering). No wonder Apple has gone down the crapper. They haven't moved forward much in 10 years. :(

Why, is there a major shortage of over-sized paper weights? Just get rid of it. Set it on the curb and watch to see who picks it up.

You might try contacting the Smithsonian. I think they collect old stuff there. I would agree with others in this thread that it has no worth, however, I've seen people on ebay bid on used shoes, so anything is possible.

It probably is not worth selling since you would probably only get a few bucks for it. I think the Mac IIci has a 25MHz 68030 processor (what could you use one of these for? about as powerful as the chips in the PalmV). You can probably erase the hard drive if you want by forcing it to boot off of the floppy or an external HD. Since the drive is password protected you will have to force it to not boot off the internal drive. I'm not sure of the exact sequence to force it to skip the internal SCSI chain, but it is something that involves about 5 keys held down at the same time. Maybe SHIFt+ CTRL + COMMAND + OPTION + who knows what else.

<< Can't you just reformat the HD and give it to someone as a beginner PC? -kd5- >>

Only if you want to frustrate them to the point that they will swear off computers forever. A competent PC is SO cheap now that a relic like this is not even of value to a charitable organization.

My beginner PC was a little 386 with nothing but floppy drives, that I managed to install AOHell on and access the internet. Then, after I got my current PC, I reformatted the HD on the 386 and experimented with it, tweaked it with everything I could learn and download from the internet, until I was able to get it so it could be useful if I ever ran into serious trouble with this one. Hey, it was slow as snail sh*t but it was my toy for awhile and it worked.

Granted, it's now sitting in the closet collecting dust.....-kd5-
